What Is Islam?

The word "Islam" means "Submission to Allah." It is a religion that believes in one God- Allah and that prophet Muhammad
(pbuh) is His messenger. Those who believe in this religion are called Muslims. As being a Muslim, brings a lot of responsibilities. Muslims have many responsiblities toward Allah for He is our one and only God. Muslims are held accountant for both their good and bad deeds. We also believe in the day of ressurection where we will be rewarded and punished according to the way we lived this life. This life is for us to work to earn a great reward in the hereafter.


Resposiblities of Muslims

We cannot get away with merely affirming that we are Muslims and that we have accepted God as our only God and Islam as our religion. Rather, as soon as we acknowledge Allah as our only Lord and His guidance as our way of life, we take upon ourselves certain obligations and duties towards ourselves and towards others.


Quran

Allah has given us a guide to abide. Those rules and regulations were sent to us by Muhammad (pbuh) which are the actual words of Allah. The Quran is written in Arabic. For easy dailiy recitation, the Qur'an is divided into thirty equal parts.There are 114 chapters, and 6,226 verses, containing 99,464 words made up of 330, 113 letters.

The Five Pillars of Islam
Witnessing-Shahadah Shahadah means to state "Ashadu alla ilaha illa Allah, wa ashadu anna Muhammed ar-rasool Allah".This means, "I bear witness that there is no God other than Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammed is His messanger."
Prayer-Salat Salat means to pray. Muslims are to pray 5 times a day. By doing this Muslims are constatnly remembering their God, concentrating their mind, soul, and body to only one- Allah. Salat keeps the faith of a Muslim strong from heart and mind. All men and women who have reached the age of maturity are responsible to pray to Allah everyday 5 times.
  • Fajr-Before sunrise.
  • Zuhr-After the sun begins to decline from its zenith.
  • Asr-Mid-afternoon.
  • Magrib-Just after sunset.
  • Isha-night.
Zakat- Donation

Zakat means both 'purification' and 'growth.' In Islam, giving zakat means to give a specified percentage of money to needy people on certain properties that you hold (ex. gold) . During this time of the month the Muslims spiritually try to become aware and to gain true sympathy for those who are hungry.

Ramadan- Fasting

Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims who are capable to fast are supposed to fast from dawn until sundown.

Hajj- Pilgrimage to Mekkah

The annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Makkah is an obligation once in a lifetime for those who are physically and financially able to perform it.Hajj is performed in the 12th month of the Islamic Calendar.
