They say its the best movie of 2002. They are right. Put aside the storyline, which we all already know is simply brilliant and lets talk just for a second about the movie as such. The grandeur, the physical beauty of New Zealand depicted as Middle Earth, the pace and the characters, it all seems to come together better now than in The Fellowship of the ring.

Put simply, if the Fellowship of the ring introduced us to the characters, and the Two Towers strengthened our understanding of each individual.

The movie I would say is lacking only in two respects. First, it makes no sense whatsoever to someone who hasnt seen the first part, for it starts straight away with Gandalfs near death experience. And secondly it ignores the entire History of Aragons father and how he had cut the ring of Saurons hand etc. etc. all of which was elaborated in detail in the first part. So you come away from the movie thinking, now I gotta go and see part 1 all over again.

Those of us who are real fans would of course have loved to watch the entire trilogy together as a 10 hour long movie, but since there are obvious operational difficulties in that, so in any case it can be expected that the DVDs of the trilogy will sell like hot cakes just as Star Wars had.

Personally, I have been quite surprised at the way the public has taken to this movie. Having read the book several years ago, I had felt that it was an amazing piece of imagination, but never really thought that it would be so successful as a movie some say one of the most successful of all times. After all it is complex. Elves and Hobbits and Orcs and Men and many other mythical creatures. The evil of Sauron combined with the might of the rings and of course the evil wizard Saruman originating from Mordor and moving across Rohan and Gondor. Tolkiens epic drama Lord of the rings as a book didnt actually do as well as its predecessor The Hobbit which is actually about Frodos uncle Bilbo Baggins and his adventures.

Finally I must say that the movie is a classic and Peter Jackson has truly outdone himself. We wait now in anticipation for The Return of the King.
