Chapter 1: Ghostly Suspicion

"If I don't eat something soon, I'm gonna get cranky." Lina grumbled as she gropped her tummy. She walked with a slouch and a couple of feet away, Gourry was close behind. He was too hungry, and also tired. Gourry tried keeping up a good pace with Lina but he had no energy left as much as she did.

"When is there a time you don't get cranky." As soon as the words left his mouth, he regreted it. His eyes slightly squinted knowing what will come next, a clobber from Lina. He waited a few moments then opened his eye again slowly. Lina was still marching on, nursing her stomach with her hands. "I'm to tired and hungry to hit you Gourry." He sighed with relief, then Lina quickly turned around. "But don't think I'll forget 'cause once I have eaten I will get revenge!" Gourry stood up straight with worryment in his eyes and a lil urk sound came forth from his mouth.

Ten minutes had passed, Lina had reached the top of a small hill. Her eyes wondered off to what lies beyond the hill. The eyes began to swell with tears, and a huge smile crept onto her face. She gasped with happiness, Gourry still way behind heard an excited gasp. He finally reached her on top of the hill, looking at her. "Hey Lina whats---" before he could finish Lina threw her arms into the air wacking Gourry in the head knocking him out. "We're saved! we're saved! we're saved! Food! Give me the food!" She ran down the hill with energy that Gourry can't figure out where it came from.

"Lina! Wait for me!" He got up quickly and hurried along with her. Both tiny figures dashed off down the hill reaching a small resort inn, surrounded with hot springs. It was a beautiful hotel with earth tone color scheme of the outside of the building. The sun was about to set casting a shadow upon the resort that the moutains created. Lights suddenly lite up the entire facility. Two light torches flamed up as Lina passed by the entrance. Gourry look around noticing the landscape of tropical flowers and trees, then his stomach growled with hunger. He didn't care about the plants anymore. He didn't even notice the sign above the door when he walked through; it said, "Welcome to Devil's Hell Springs". Lina was already at the desk continuely hitting the sevice bell. "Service! service! Is anyone here?" She looked around the room until she felt a hand on top of hers making her stop hitting the bell.

A little old woman stood on a booster stair. Her hair was wirey, and dark purple. She had a white head band on her forehead, keeping some of her frizzy hair out of her eyes. She wore a dark red worn out kimono with white flower prints all over. Lina ,nearly freaked out slid, her hand out off the old woman's touch. The woman adjusted her circular specs on her wrinkley face. She smiled with a couple of gaps, where teeth were missing.

"Welcome to my hot spring resort, will you be staying the night here?" the old lady spoke. She closed her hands together, then the sleves of her kimono covering them up. Gourry took a look around the lobby noticing that there weren't any other people around.

"Yes, me and my friend will be renting two rooms. The best that you have!" Lina grabbed her bulging pouch and dumped huge emeralds and a few gold peices on the counter top. "The woman glanced at the treasure, then looked back up at Lina with her squinty little eyes. "I'm sorry..." said the lady, "but we only have one room left." Lina slammed her hand on the desk. "What?!" she exclaimed. Gourry walked over to the desk with a spacey gaze saying, "But where are all the people? It's so empty." The old lady answered, "Because they're either in the springs or they have already went to bed. We don't have that many guests this time of year." "Then you must have more rooms!" "Sorry red head, the rest of the rooms are being re-decorated for next season." The woman shooked her head.

Lina looked down with frustration on her face and was about to growl but hunger stuck her harder then ever. "Oh, fine, fine. How much will it be? Does it come with dinnner and breakfast?" "It's 400 gold peices for each night, a huge dinner banquet is always served later in the evening. Infact, you just made it in time!" the old lady answered cheerfuly with one arm extending out with her index finger pointing up. "Great, don't carea bout the price just tell us where the dinner hall is." Lina forked over a descent size green emerald to the old lady.

The lady pointed to a hallway, "That's where the banquet will be, tonight we're serving wild hog, with trimmings and all." "Yes!" Lina ran off down the hallway, Gourry still looking around the lobby. Thoughts ran across his mind about why this place seems so deserted. A skriek came forth from the hallway, it was Lina's. Gourry hurried down the dimmed hallway until he came upon a brigthened end. A huge half circular room with light torches on the walls engulfed Gourry. A huge plant hanging from the ceiling, had vines hanging low. They had pink tiny flowers blossoms all over. A long, oak table with thick artistic cravings had the most scrumptious spread that they ever laid their eyes on.

Lina swoon with joy and already choosen her seat. "Come on Gourry, lets eat!" With that she laid a napkin on her lap and grabbed a fork and knife. Gourry slightly annoyed, walked to his seat. "Lina?" he asked as he picked up a pitcher of wine that was a few inches away. Lina was to preoccupied to answer from all the food she was scrafing down. "Lina, don't you still think it's weird? This dinning room is empty, except for us." He poured a glass of red wine for himself. Lina replied in between bites, "So? Maybe...their..all in the...springs." Then she swallowed, "Or they could be in bed like what the old hag said. Stop worrying and eat. I'm paying a fortune for this meal." She continues eating almost everything in front of her. "Hmm...fine." Gourry started on his side of the table and work up at Lina's pace. Soon within 13 minutes, all what left of the meal was bones. Lina sighed with relief, "Ahhh, I think I beaten my own record!" She said as she patted her stomach. Gourry proped his legs on the table picking leftovers out of his teeth with a toothpick. "I'm good for a while," Gourry said then got up and streached. "Now I'm gonna go relax in the hotsprings." "Hey great idea!" Lina shouted. "wonder which way it is to the springs." Gourry wondered and scratched his head. "It's in the other direction," a fimilular voice said. Lina and Gourry looked down and to their surprise the old hag was back. "Ack! Would you stop doing that!" Lina said scornfully. The hag laughed and said, "Follow me." She gives them a signal with her hand.

She lead them out of the dinner hallway through the lobby and into another hallway. The way how the hag carried herself was like she was floating on air. Gourry kept a close eye on her. In this hallway in between light torches there was a door with numbers. "Oh and by the way you two, here is your room." She pointed to a dark red door with a golden number 66 on it. She gives Lina a skeleton key, no really a skeleton key. "You may return to your room when you are done bathing." Lina looked at the door then at Gourry. "Wanna check it out now?" she asked. "Nah, I want to bathe first." When they turned around, the hag was gone. "I knew she would do that." Lina wasn't surprised this time.

The two of them walked all the way to the end of the hallway until the reached their destination. Another room only with one huge double door with two lion statues with bat wings created the guests. Lina and Gourry opened one side of the door with some of their strength. Inside awaited a tropical paradise. Inside the entire place was paved with a couple of shrubs nicely alined almost surrounding the lagoon. The lagoon was almost crystal clear, and vapors of steam rised above the surafce of the water. Far in the back was a huge built in waterfall, with big bright orange flowers decorating the top of it. Instead of brick walls there were glass windows and high above at the ceiling there was a huge sunroof. It was dark out and the sky was mad with stars. Lina jaw dropped from awstruck. Gourry whistled being impressed from the decorations. "Gourry, you go over there and I'll stay over here. When we're...undressed we'll meet each other in the middle of the lagoon."
