HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE RAGDOLLThe Ragdoll cat was bred by Ann Baker in Riverside, California. It was in early 1960 that the breed was created. It is believed that a white Angora-type named Josephine was bred to a seal mitted cat (possibly a Birman-type) named Raggedy Ann Daddy Warbucks and a kitten from that mating was later mated to a Burmese-type cross, and this started it all!! All Ragdolls have blue eyes and the coats are pointed in colour (like the Himalayan or Siamese) appearing in three patterns and four colours. The colours are Sealpoint, Bluepoint, Chocolatepoint and Lilacpoint. The patterns are :-

MittedDark points and light body like a Colourpoint but also has white "mitts" on the front paws and white "boots" on the back legs and feet together with a white chin. Bi-ColourDark points (ears and tail) but the mask is interrupted by an inverted "V" running between the eyes and expanding into the muzzle.
Since importing a Seal Tabbypoint (Lynx) male from California, we are now able to breed the beautiful Tabbies in the above patterns in Seal and Blue. To describe a Ragdoll, combine the colour and pattern names. For example, a Seal Ragdoll, depending on the pattern might be a "Seal Colour point," "Seal Mitted," or "Seal Bi-Colour." The Ragdoll has large, oval blue eyes and a sweet expression. The large, rounded ears are set with a slight forward tilt. The profile is curved with the look of a "ski slope" as it merges to the top of the head. New colours are now being introduced into the Ragdoll breed making the future very exciting. |
