Sun Rise (estimated) 5:48 AM
Sun Set (estimated) 8:22 PM
Moon Rise (estimated) 9:17 PM
Crusing Notes 1 The moon will be almost full, and will rise shortly after sunset, giving the possibility of a warm night time cruise under a full moon to the raftup location for those who should desire it. The normal day will provide 14 and 1/2 hours of daylight, not including pre-dawn and post-dusk.
Crusing Notes 2 A close examination of Fishing bay shows a horse shoe shaped bay wide enough to hold a wide raftup. It may receive wakes from traffic transiting up and down the Piankatank river, but it is sufficently out of the channel to mitigate any but the strongest of wakes. The bottom on a chart shows a average depth of 20 feet. Bring lots of anchor rhode and lots of fenders. The local spit of land (Stove Point Neck) shows a rapid shoelling from the 20 foot depth to 2 feet, which means in the right spot you may be able to put the bow on the beach. A depth of 2 feet also suggests a large wide beach at low tide.
Crusing Notes 3 Boats should start to gather about noon. Hail on VHF Channel 16 when you get close. We will use channel 72 as the working channel once communications is established.
Crusing Notes 4 (Dated 5/10/02) The following report was gathered by raftup captain Mark Tamblyn on his recent visit to Fishing Bay
The visit to Fishing Bay went well. We dropped the anchor for lunch and then motored home with a stop at Jackson Creek on the way. With less than a dozen boats signed up I really think the backup location should be Jackson creek. It is so close you can see Fishing bay thru the trees!
There is a private yacht club on the spit of land that separates Fishing Bay from Jackson Creek (Fishing Bay Yacht Club) They have slips on Jackson Creek and have a ramp on the Fishing Bay side. Lots of big J boats and fancy racing boats and the like. Ruark (sp?) marina is the small marina on Fishing Bay. There is a small amount of traffic but not enough to be a problem. I think that for most days Fishing bay will be fine as a location. If the weather does get windy then there is a lot of room for us all to spread out. And the bottom is definitely good for the anchor. I would not want to move to Jackson Creek after dark. The entrance is a dogleg and is not at all where you would expect it to be.
BTW
Be sure to stay on the correct side of the markers as you come into the Piankatank River. There is a long shallow area that runs out from the end of the spit that forms the East side of Fishing Bay. We saw someone run aground on it because they didn't look at the chart.
Crusing Notes 5 (Dated 5/22/02 FINALY NOTES) We are go for the Southern Raftup. At this point, we have checked the weather reports (they look good), and with our sponsors (good to go) and can find nothing in the way of making this happen. Your raftup captains will be leaving for the trip in the next day, so you can expect no further updates to the web site. SEE YOU THERE!
