In the summer of 2001, I worked with students and teachers at a summer science camp and inservice in the Navajo Nation. At the beginning of a week of inquiry about physical and chemical changes, a child asked, "Is fry bread a chemical reaction?" This culturally important food became the focus of an extended investigation carried out by teachers and students when school resumed in the fall. I recounted the story to my own preservice teachers in Physics for Teachers and we began our own semester with an inquiry into fry bread. Read a sample project here.
