At about 150,000kms, my 1995 Nissan 200SX SE had a problem.  The "check engine" light went on.  We diagnosed the problem using the computer and it displayed 3 long and 2 short flashes.  This means as per the Hanes manual that the EGR valve does not operate.  Since it was just the EGR valve, we decided to just reset the "check engine" light and forget about it.  After a few months it resurfaced again.  We reset it again.  However after this incident, it happened again after a couple of weeks so we decided to fix it.  After taking out the air filter box and checking the EGR valve, we still couldn't figure out what was going on so we decided to remove the EGR valve.   When we removed the EGR valve, it just so happened that we needed to remove a hose connected to it and noticed that it had cracks and a hole.  The hose pretty much ripped easily when we removed it.  Alas, we finally found the problem.  This took about 3 hours and CDN$20 dollars but it was worth it.  So check the hose connected to the EGR valve for cracks and leaks before concluding the EGR valve is the problem since this hose is really close to the intake manifold and it gets really hot in that area.  I conclude this is just normal wear and tear.
