| Colonel Robert Morgan, pilot of the B-17 Flying Fortress "Memphis Belle" passed away on May 15th, 2004 at 11:30 P.M. He was soon followed by his Flight Engineer, Harold Loch, who passed away November 12, 2004. Morgan, Loch, and the rest of the crew were the first in the USAAF 8th Air Force to complete their 25-mission tour of duty in Europe. Their final mission was completed on May 17, 1943. At that time in the war, the men conducting daylight bombing raids into France and Germany were faced with horrific odds, making the Belle's record all the more miraculous. It was my privilege to know Col. Morgan personally for a time. I met him at Bassingbourn Airfield in England, where the Belle was based during the war, for the 50th Anniversary of the completion of the 25th mission. That evening, Col. Morgan presented me with my Eagle Scout medal. It was a night I will never forget. Never have I met a kinder or more dignified man. I had always hoped to see him again, but it looks like I now have a lot longer to wait. A large piece of history passes with Col. Morgan and Sgt. Loch. After seeing so much war in Europe and Asia, I hope they have found peace. Their contributions to freedom were wholly selfless and may they be forever remembered. God speed, Colonel Morgan. God speed, Sergeant Loch. I will never forget you. |
