| Tyr was the norse sky god of Law and justice. He is also well known for this following story making him the bravest of all the gods. Odin the leader of all the Gods declared him as a son because of what Tyr did. The god's had a pet wolf, The Fenrir (sometimes 'Fenris') wolf. It was on of the children of Loki (God of the underworld). The wolf respected all the Gods, so they let it roam free despite warning that it was the same as the other children of Loki: evil. This was proven later when it grew up and its respect for the Gods died away. The Gods became worried so, they decided they'd have to stop it. They choose to bind it, they told the Fenrir wolf they were having a competition to see who was the strongest. They tied the wolf up in different chains and ropes but everytime the wolf managed to break free, as though the constraints were nothing. So they pulled out a ribbon. A ribbon they got from the dwarfs especially for binding the wolf. All was going fine except that just as they were about to tie the wolf in the rope, it got suspicious. It knew they were up to something. So it made a deal with the Gods. It said to them, it would only allow them to tie it up if one of the Gods put his hand in its mouth. Tyr was the only one willing to do it. Knowing he'd loose his hand, he still put his hand in that wolfs mouth. He sacrificed it for the others, and like planed the Gods tied the wolf up in the rope, and it couldnt break free. It was bound for good. so bit off Tyrs hand. Tyr represents the wounded God. Teiwaz is a rune stone named after the god Tyr. It reflects this story by representing strengh, corage and bravery. It is also known as 'The Spiritual Warrior'. It's a volentary sacrifice, of someone who knows exactly what their giving up and why. |
