| Hints for Better Reception: Your RadioSoccer broadcasts are transmitted by 3doubleX throughout Melbourne, Geelong, and nearby country areas in high quality AM mono; and by Southern FM and North-West FM throughout Melbourne in high-quality FM stereo. The power output permitted under the radio transmission licences for SouthernFM and North-West FM is less than that enjoyed by network Commercial Radio stations. This can affect your reception quality, but you can take significant steps to improve that quality. Southern FM 88.3 transmits from Moorabbin, North-West FM 98.9 from Glenroy. First try tuning-in to the station closest to you, this will usually give better reception, but also try the other station as well. Sometimes it will be better. Frequency Modulation (FM) radio is line-of-sight propogation. This means that, unlike AM radio, FM radio is subject to areas of poor reception in "shadows" of hills and tall buildings, and in valleys These shadows can be very small and moving your radio/aerial just a few metres can significantly improve your signal. Also, try to have your radio/aerial positioned as high as possible. If you are indoors, place your radio/antenna near a window on the side of the building facing the station you are tuned to. Importantly, have your aerial extended vertically as this is the alignment of transmission. If you can attach your aerial to your TV antenna this will often give the best reception, particularly if the antenna has a masthead booster. You could also try a tuneable rabbit-ear type indoors TV antenna. Obviously, the quality of your radio is important. A Hi-Fi Tuner, with good FM antenna, will usually be best for indoors, and a car radio (with aerial fully up) for outdoors. Although station transmission is in stereo, the feed from the ground to the studio is mono. Thus, there is no benefit in having your receiver set to stereo reception. If you can set your receiver to "FM Mono" this should improve your signal strength and clarity. 3doubleX should provide a clear signal throughout Melbourne and Geelong on any AM radio receiver We hope these hints improve your reception and listening pleasure. If you are in the Melbourne metropolitan area and are having significant reception problems, we would like to know. Please email us. |
