Radio Northsea International
A brief history RNI was introduced to the European population in 1970, two swiss businessmen Mr Bollier and Mr Meister financed the operation. RNI had the best equipped radio ship of all, a transmitter which delivered an astounding 100Kw if needed, 3 short wave transmitters of 10Kw each, even an FM transmitter on 102Mhz beamed at Holland. It was a great success, off course it had it's scares and adventures but RNI was a great station whatever side of the North Sea it's signal eminated from. It closed in 1974 due to the Dutch MOA making it illegal, it's last days were being used as target practice for the Libyan airforce, after being used by that country as a radio outlet. A very sad end for the most powerful and brightly painted pirate ever, relive her most memorable airchecks and jingles on these pages.
RNI from 1970, one of it's first broadcasts, fantastic memories.
RNI changed to Radio Caroline, urging new 18 year old voters to vote tory, the then labour government 'jammed' their signal.
RNI jingles were really great, here's a few of them
Here is Alan West doing the business in March 1970, sorry about the quality of the recording but it is over 32 years old. Both of these links have the great Mr West on the self op desk, with a great delivery, ah what memories of Blackpool thay year.
Two airchecks from the painted lady RNI, both of them with the voice of Andy Archer who was later a regular DJ on Caroline and Radio Orwell in Suffolk.
Roger 'TWIGGY' Day on RNI in early 1970, I must admit RNI got me interested in listening to 'free' radio again. Caroline had disappeared in 1968, so I must be honest I had to listen to BBC Radio 1 or Luxembourg, occasionally AFN Europe.
Carl Mitchel doing his bit for the world wildlife fund by promoting an album by various artists who 'donated' songs to the record.
Dave Gregory now there's a name from the past, he once stood in for the great Tony Blackburn on his breakfast show on BBC Radio1 in 1969ish.
Here is the latest pop news circa 1970, Alan West and Andy Archer co-present this programme which highlited gigs and events in the pop world.
Sorry abou the quality of this snippet but it's the best I can do, the legendary Spangles Muldoon (Chris Carey) in full flight on RNI in 1971.
The late and great Daffy Don Allen was a stalwart of Watery wireless, he was on Caroline North in 66-68 then transferred to RNI in 1970-1974.
Alan West with the weather on RNI in 1970, I remember I had just started work the year before and one of my mates had RNI painted on his havisack.
Alan West asking for reception reports in August 1970 on RNI, the weather in english and dutch, this is Alan West in the hot seat. Three more excerpts from the 'Sound of europe and The voice of the World'.
