Immigration

For immigration, a nation must have open borders, closed borders, or permeable borders. Open borders result in a constant influx of immigrants if a country is rich, which will lead to overpopulation and lack of jobs. Closed borders force the nation to be largely self sufficient. Permeable borders allow the nation to allow in whomever it wants. In the US, we have a permeable border, but with the amount of amnesty we give out, we might as well switch to open borders. As you may know, Bush wishes to grant amnesty to Mexican aliens, giving them rights such as minimum wage and other workers rights. He also allows them to stay for 3 years in the US after announcing the fact that they are illegal. This is almost the same as the amnesty plan for Canadian illegals in 1995. Under that plan, they could stay indefinetly, but then, how many canadian illegals are there? I think that this plan is simply a bid for reelection, as Bush needs hispanic voters. This angers me greatly, as the goal of politics should not be to get reelected, but to lead the people well and adhere to the rules set before you. If we are to grant amnesty to another group every few years, why have border laws at all? I have no problem with the immigrants themselves; i take issue only with the fact that the aliens do not take the time to register for citizenship and that many immigrants, illegal and legal, do not take the time to learn the language of the nation they plan to live in. I take issue with the fact that the president and many other politicians seem to have forgotten that we have borders around our country.

From this essay so far, you would assume that I oppose our immigration system. I will now clarify on that: I do not oppose our immigration SYSTEM, i oppose changing the immigration system for no reason other than to gain reelection votes. I also have a problem with many anti-immigration people and their reasons for opposing immigration. Some say that mexicans take our jobs. I say they only take our jobs because we americans believe we are too good for working class jobs. They cannot take a job already occupied; they take jobs we do not want, and work dilligently doing these surf jobs as we sit at home and complain about how our economy sucks. Many Americans then turn around and accuse them of stealing our jobs. This is completely unfounded. Even if it was true, why would it matter? Are americans more human than mexican immigrants? This is the only way it would matter if the immigrants are taking our jobs! The other view on immigration i see is the 9/11 paranoid people. Many view 9/11 as the fault of poor immigration policy. It would be nice if they learned the facts: The hijackers had been in the US for several years planning this. They had come legally, and lived in the US peacefully being educated or doing jobs. There is abolutely NOTHING immigration policy could have done to prevent 9/11, except perhaps banning people from entering the country.
