FRIENDSHIP

 Among the innumerable choices that God gave us, the greatest is the freedom to choose our friends. We can't choose our birth place, our ancestry or our siblings- but as a beautiful compensation.... He granted us the liberty to choose our friends...What more could we ask for??? Friendship is the ship that let us sail safely through troubled waters, the umbrella in the rain of misfortune, the hand that hold us tight when the world seems to turn away. I have known through my life, that its not always the length of the relation that matter. I may stay with one person all my life and still be strangers to each other's heart and on the other hand I may know someone for a minute and feel as though we were friends forever.

 But this beautiful relation need to be nurtured.... to be tend with care and to be handled with love. Then only can this sapling grow strong, grow deep and wide... from the teeny tiny seedling to a big mighty tree. We spend lots of time to achieve our dreams, our ambitions and our aspirations and in this rush to conquer heights, we sidetrack our friends. The investment which has to last all life through gets the minimum capital from us. We keep postponing  the long pending phone calls, the delayed reply to mails- but we find no dearth of time to wait for a ticket in movie hall, or to spend days at a stretch with a date. But when we need a shoulder to lean on, a hand to cling on, its these buddies that rush up to us. Even when times are hard for them, they somehow find a way to assist us- when the world seems grey they lend us their pink tinted glasses. The fun times we shared, the olden days which have us smiling together, crying together and leaning together gives us a hug of solace when we are down.

Whom do we call our friend? For me a friend is someone with whom you can be your true self. Someone who will accept me in spite of knowing my imperfections. Someone who will dare say I am wrong when I am, someone who appreciates me for a work well done. The most distinguishing feature of a good friend is that though he opines on our life's matters, he stands by us and support our decisions, and when time unfolds if our decision proves to be wrong still our friend stands by us searching for a solution. And the truest test for friendship is that he stays with you in a hospital or bank when he could rather be on a vacation or sleeping!!!

But we should always keep in mind that they need our attention just like they need love. They need some space to grow, a little space to be themselves. We must not be too cloy, too possessive that they suffocate and we should always keep in mind that they too, like us, are not perfect. Lets us not keep a track of misgivings or that who made the last call or wrote the last mail. The only track record that need to be kept are the helping hand they lend us, the frowns that they replaced with smiles. Lets us value this beautiful gift God granted us by taking care of our friendships, by loving them with all our heart and by never letting jealousy or possessiveness ruin this gift we have.
