| State/District The Lions objectives are to provide help for people in immediate need, to find better cures for sight and hearing problems, and to prevent the development of blindness and deafness in the future, here at home and throughout the world. Virginia Lions work to improve peoples' lives through several associated organizations by giving donations and volunteering their time. The Old Dominion Eye Foundation is responsible for collecting and processing eye donations. Last year over 900 corneas were supplied for transplant and 1200 whole eyes were supplied for tissue research. The Lions Hearing Foundation and Research Center at UVA has been in the forefront of cochlear implant research. The Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in Roanoke collects and processes used eyeglasses from around the east coast of the US for reuse throughout the world. Thousands of pairs of glasses have been recycled for those who would otherwise have to do without it. |
