The Volshin War

By: Brad Fore & Derek Kestner
Based on Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry

Prologue

Foreman woke with a start.  He looked around, disoriented.  He asked a woman in an old-style Starfleet uniform standing near his bed, Where am I?
The woman turned, and said, Dr. Hayter, hes awake.  Youre on the Bozeman, Mr. Foreman.
As Brad looked around and let that sink in, he noticed he was visibly younger when he looked at his hands.  Then Dr. Karl Hayter came walking in.  The Doctor said, Good Morning, Mr. Foreman, how are you feeling?
Foreman replied, Im feeling dead.  How did I get here?
Hayter answered, You were severely injured.
Foreman nodded.  I expected as much.  How did the Bozeman get way out here, and why do you look so much younger?
Hayter looked puzzled.  He said, Brad, you were part of an away team on an archeological dig on Allendon III.
Foreman lay there for several moments, letting that sink in.  He then said, What happened?
Hayter replied, You were accidentally struck with a laser digging tool, sending your body into shock.  We thought you wouldnt recover.
Brad answered, But theres no way, I was on a mission to retrieve the-did you find Derek?
Hayters face turned even more puzzled.  Brad, Derek didnt go on the away team, it was only you, Commander Bush, the Captain, and myself.
Brad continued, Is the rest of my crew all right?  Surav?  Whitney??
Hayter asked, What are you talking about, Brad?
Brad thought for a few moments, then said, Dont you remember?  The Bozeman met us in orbit around Montgomery, you all even had dinner with us, then you said you had to depart, and left the system.  We continued on with our mission.
     Hayter asked, What mission?
Foreman replied, To retrieve Kestner from Romulan Space.
Hayter snapped his fingers.  Brad, we did monitor heavy activity in your brain while you were un-conscious, it appears you had a long-term dream.
Foreman suddenly gasped.  So youre telling me twenty years havent passed since Derek transferred off the Bozeman?
Hayter replied, Dereks still on the Bozeman.
Foremans eyes widened as he sat up, Then its not too late!  Brad jumped out of the bed.
Hayter said, grabbing Brads shoulders, Wait a minute, do you want to see Derek?
     Brad replied, Yes, immediately!
Hayter continued, Just sit back down, Ill call for him.
Foreman sat back down on the edge of the bed.  As he waited for Kestner, he thought to himself,
What's going on? Foreman shook his head to clear it of any wandering thoughts as Derek came walking into Sick Bay.  Brad rushed over to him, grasping him in a tight hug.  Derek smiled awkwardly and said, Okay, Im glad to see you, too.
Suddenly, the doors opened again, and Whitney came rushing in.  Brad walked over to her, embraced her in a loving kiss, and then said, You dont know how glad I am too see you.
She replied, Youre the one whos been out cold for two weeks.
Brad backed away from her only slightly.  Two weeks?  It all finally came back to Foreman, and he said excitedly, Oh, I remember!  That laser struck me square in the forehead!  He reached up, feeling the raised area on his forehead.  He then smiled, and said to himself, Im gonna get it right this time.  He reached over and took Derek and Whitney in his arms, hugging them both.  Wait a second, he thought.
If it was all just a dream, then why do I still have twenty years worth of memories in my mind?

The Volshin War

Captain's Personal Log, Stardate: 51687.6.  The Bozeman has been ordered to transport some key officers to the Federation outpost near the Volshin border.  The outpost, constructed on behalf of the Klingon Empire, has only been constructed for six weeks, and has been under- manned for the entire time.  On a personal note, I am beginning to worry about the growing friction between Foreman and Kestner. I fear that it will soon encompass Whitney and Ashley as well.  I must be prepared to use any means to keep this crew working at top efficiency.  End of Log Entry.

Ashley Rickman sat alone in a corner of the Crew Lounge.  She was watching as Lieutenant Commander Derek Kestner and the Lady Q were dining.  From his mind she could feel joy and contentment.  Suddenly, Crewman Lefler, a tall, blank man entered through the main doorway.  She noticed that his mind was unusually focused, not wondering like most human minds.  If it weren't for his physical appearance, she would have sworn he was a Vulcan.  He walked over to the bar and talked to the bartender as if he were looking for someone.  Brad Foreman walked in behind him.
She stood to greet him, when suddenly a tsunami of jealousy flooded from Kestner's mind.  She glanced over to him, noticing his back turned to the wall, away from the Lounge.  He hadnt even noticed Foreman, and yet she felt extreme jealousy from him.  The surge of jealousy increased, and she became lightheaded.  Suddenly, she felt herself lose her footing, and she began to fall.  Before she reached the floor, two strong arms broke her descent.  They placed her back on her feet, and she whirled around, seeing Foreman.  He said to her, "I noticed you stumbling around over here and I came to see if you were all right."
She replied, "I'm fine, I just lost my balance, that's all."  She looked around the Crew Lounge once again, noticing Lefler had vanished.  The jealousy had left as well.
Foreman looked at her quizzically, "Are you sure you're all right?"
     "I'm positive," she replied.
Foreman said, "Well, if you're sure you're okay, I was just gonna get myself a drink, would you like one?"
     "I most certainly would."

Ashley sat in her quarters later that evening, thinking about the day's events.  Why was Derek jealous when he didn't know Foreman was even in the room, especially since he was so content a moment before?  She tried to picture everything that occurred in the lounge around the time Derek's jealousy overwhelmed her.  Let's see, she thought.  Derek was dining with the Lady Q, then Brad walked in.  Wait a minute, somebody came in before Foreman.  Who was it, I can't remember.  She combed her brain.  Oh yeah, Lefler came in just before Foreman, but what would he have to do with anything?  These were all questions Rickman wanted answered.

Ashley decided to take a walk to clear her head and focus her thoughts.  As she rounded a corner in the corridor, she saw Derek walking just up ahead.  She called to him, Hey, Derek.
Derek swung around, saying, You called?
Ashley caught up to him, and said, I saw you and the Lady Q in the Crew Lounge.
Kestner replied, Yeah, isnt she wonderful?
Ashley said, I suppose, I havent really talked to her that much.  Does she make you happy?
Derek answered, Yes, she really does.  But something unusual happened today in the Crew Lounge.  I was talking to Q, when all of a sudden, a surge of jealousy washed over me.  I couldnt explain it, I mean, I was fully content just a moment before.
Rickman started off into space, as if in thought.  Then she said, I dont know, Derek, I dont know whats going on, but I intend to find out.
Derek replied, I hope you find out soon, because I think these waves of jealousy are beginning to affect my friendship with Brad.
Ashley said, Is your jealousy directed toward him?
Derek answered, At first, it was, because he had a wife and I was alone.  But, after I met the Lady Q, the jealousy became unfocused; it was just there.  I dont know what Im jealous about now.
Well, Derek, I really dont know what to tell you, Ill dig around a while and see if I can come up with something.
Thanks, Ashley, Ill tell you if I become jealous again.  As Kestner turned to walk off, Crewman Lefler came walking down the corridor.  As Lefler walked past him, Kestner froze in his tracks.  Ashley suddenly felt herself overwhelmed with another wave of jealousy coming from Derek.  She staggered on her feet, unable to keep her balance.  Fortunately, as Lefler rounded the corner, the jealousy subsided.  Kestner came up to her, saying, You know when I said I would tell you if I became jealous again?
Ashley replied softly, Yes, I felt it, too.
They both looked at the corner Lefler rounded, and Ashley felt Derek think, Theres got to be a connection.  Ashley said, I think so, too.

As soon as Derek rounded the corner, he tapped his communicator.  Kestner to Foreman.
Brad replied moments later, Foreman here.
Derek said, Meet me in my quarters as soon as you can.
Brad answered, Ill be there in a minute.
Derek came to his door, and it swooshed open before him.  He walked over to his couch and sat down.  A few minutes later, Derek heard the door chime.  Come in, he said.
Brad Foreman entered the room, a puzzled look on his face.  Why am I here?
Before Kestner could reply, a blinding light filled every corner of the room.  It vanished in an instant, to be replaced by the Lady Q.  Greetings Derek, Brad.
     Derek replied, Hey.
Q continued, I have something of great importance to discuss, or rather show you.
Derek and Brad said together, Continue.
At that, both Derek and Brad felt themselves falling into a deep sleep.

Commander Derek Kestners Personal Log, Stardate: 52118.3.  The Klingons have notified Starfleet that a Volshin ship is in Klingon Space.  The Eclipse is enroute to the coorindates of the Volshin ship.  The crew is uneasy, after all, little is known of the Volshins and of their culture.  We know even less about their reaction to other vessels.  On a personal note, it has been almost a year since Q died in my arms.  Starfleet still cant explain what power could kill a supposedly immortal being, however it doesnt matter to me how she died, all I know is shes gone.  Also, it has been a little over a year since I requested transfer off the Bozeman.  Ive never been the same since those events.  End of Log Entry.

The Prometheus-class U.S.S. Eclipse sped through Klingon space at warp 9.5.  Kestner turned his head toward his Captain, saying, Sir, approaching designated coordinates.
Captain Christopher Tucker replied to his First Officer, Thank you, Mr. Kestner, all stop.
The Eclipse slowed to a stop just in front of a large unknown ship.  Captain Tucker stood saying, What type of vessel is that?
Ops replied, It appears to be of Volshin design, although it matches no known ship.
Before Tucker could respond, a large golden sphere of energy shot out from the Volshin ship.
     Tucker yelled, Brace for impact!
The TON torpedo slammed into the Eclipses shields, neutralizing them instantaniously.  Tucker ordered, Return fire!  All torpedo bays full barrage!
The Prometheus-class carries Photon, Quantum, and Tricobalt torpedoes, and the Eclipse let the Volshins have them all.  Shortly after the gold-colored vessel ignited in space, a message came on the Viewer.  A tall Volshin with beedy black eyes and large muscles bellowed, Federation, you have commited an act of supreme dishonor.  By destroying the Czars flagship, you have killed our Czar.  May your souls burn in hell.  With that, the transmission ended.
     Captain Tucker spat, Locate.
Tactical replied, Message comes from a small support craft in the area.  It just entered warp.
     Tucker said, Heading?
     Volshin space.
     Tucker ordered, Pursuit course, engage.
Kestner cut in, May I remind the Captain of the danger of entering hostile space.
The Captain shot him a glance, saying, Im well aware of the risk.  However, Starfleet sent us to elimate the threat, and this support craft may be little, but if it reaches Volshin earshot then we may be looking at a Galactic war.
Kestner stood down.  Aye, sir, he muttered.

The Eclipse entered Volshin space, to be met by a fleet of several Volshin heavy cruisers.  she sustained heavy damage, along with several casualties, including Captain Tucker.  Under Derek Kestners command, the Eclipse managed to escape the Volshin ships, retreating into Klingon Space.  One month after this inncedent, the Volshin First Ambassador became Czar.  He declared war on the Federation only days later.  The Volshins massed a fleet near Klingon space, and sent it bearing down on the Klingon Empire.  The Klingon fleet was decimated within days.  Shortly thereafter, the Volshins ripped through Klingon Space, destroying every planet in its wake and enslaving millions.  QonoS was among the planets obliterated.  The Federation, seeing the Volshin armada advancing, assembled a mighty task force of nearly all its ships at Shermans Planet, on the Klingon border.  Brad Foreman was there.

On the Akira-class U.S.S. Rome, Commander Brad Foreman watched from his Captains chair at the battle unfolding before him.  Several hours ago, the Volshin fleet had crossed the border and advanced on Shermans Planet.  The Fleet had held its ground well, but it was weakening.  The Volshins, too, were feeling the pounding.  By his latest estimates, the Volshin fleet had been cut by three-fourths.  The Rome had lost her Captain, and Foreman now felt the burdon of command.  Whitney had also suffered a massive head injury, and was eventually pulled from Starfleet service.  He stared at the viewscreen in awe at the battle raging before him.  Suddenly, the Volshin fleet turned and limped back into Klingon space.  Foreman was about to give the instinctive order to follow, then he saw the sensor readouts.  Only seventeen of the Fleets ships remained.  That meant over sixty ships were lost in a matter of hours!
He turned to Tactical, saying, Hail the Fleet Admiral.
Tactical replied, Sir, the Admirals ship was destroyed.  The highest ranking officer alive is Captain Picard.
Foreman said, Then hail the Enterprise.
     Onscreen.
The battlefield changed to a devestated Soverign-class Bridge and an even more devestated-looking Captain.  Commander Foreman, the man said dryly.
Brad replied, Captain Picard, I am told you are now the leader of the remaining Fleet.
Picard answered, It seems that way.  Im sorry about Captain Richardson.  He was a good man.
Foreman said softly, Yes, he was, sir, a very good man.
Picard said, Foreman, you realize that youre now a Captain.  Foreman nodded.  Picard continued, Then you must also realize that as a Captain, you are now the second-highest ranked officer in the Fleet.
Foreman again nodded grimly.  Sir, what is the Fleets next action?
We must fall back to Alpha-Centauri.  The Volshins will not adavance again soon, their fleet is as crippled as ours.  What we must do is re-open the Centaurian Shipyards.
A look of surpirse came over Foreman.  But, sir, arent the Centaurian Shipyards only capable of building Constitution-class ships?
Picard frowned, Im afraid so, but its all we have.  The population of Alpha Centauri IV can crew the ships, and we can modify them with better shielding and weapons.  Foreman, its all we have.
Brad nodded solemnly.  Yes, sir, awaiting orders to depart.
     Picard replied, Whenever youre ready.

The remaining Fleet fell back to Alpha Centauri as ordered.  There, consturction began at the Centaurian Shipyards for the first time in a century.  They managed to construct ten Constitution-class ships before the Volshins returned.  And return they did.  Starfleet later found that the Volshins had constructed a reserve fleet even bigger than the one that decimated Shermans Planet.  It turned out they had been planning for a Federation war for decades.  Apparently they knew of the Federation long before Starfleet knew of the Volshins.  The Volshin fleet stormed into Alpha-Centauri, devastating the outer planets in minutes, laying ruin to outposts and solar energy collectors.
As the fleet approached Alpha-Centauri IV, Picard ordered Foreman to fall back with a handful of other ships not in the battle.  Their goal was to preserve the Federation and its knowledge in the event that Earth was destroyed.  The Rome, along with another Akira, two Galaxy-classes and the U.S.S. Bozeman, fell back to Vulcan.  They were joined by Kestner on the Eclipse and the Soverign-class U.S.S. Bell.  They watched in horror on the subspace relays as Alpha-Centauri was obliterated.  The puny Fleet was destroyed in minutes, but the Enterprise managed to escape.
The Volshin fleet layed waste to the remaining planets in the system, then induced a supernova on Alpha-Centauri itself, destroying the Alpha-Centauri system and the surrounding outposts.  They barely slowed down as they passed through the Alpha-Centauri system on their course to Earth.  The Enterprise followed, desperately trying to deter them from Earth with pinpoint phaser blasts aimed on several ships in the rear.  The Volshins didnt even bother to return fire.  It has been said that the Volshins have human intelligence, Romulan stealth, and Klingon aggression all bottled into one: a highly dangerous race.

On the Volshin ship Gradvlimeir, Chief Battle Agent Vlertonie met in The Battle Room with several of his top advisors.  He looked at them all, saying, The Federation is ruined!  And, my friends, its all thanks to you.  We took the entire Federation in only ten of their day-cycles.  And now, only one thing remains: Earth.  Once we take their Homeworld, we will declare ourselves the New Federation and take in the other major races of the Galaxy, either by their own will or by force, which ever they decide.  There was much laughter around the smoke-filled room, and Vlertonie continued, I want you all to know one thing: once it is done, I will make certain the Czar rewards you heavily!  The room erupted in cheers.

When they reached Earth, the Enterprise came around in front of the fleet in a futile attempt at a last stand, and was met by heavy fire from the Volshins.  She erupted in a ball of fire seconds later.  Earths Planetary Defenses were activated immedately after the Volshins entered the system, and it began picking off Volshin ships as soon as they were in range.  Being the most advanced Planetary Defensive System in the Federation, it destroyed several Volshin ships, but the Volshin fleet eventually overpowered Earths PDS, and took nearly all of Earths population as slaves.  It set up a temporary base in the Terran System, and began to rebuild its fleet for the final attack on Vulcan.
By this time, Foreman and Kestners task force had reestablished the Federation Headquarters on Vulcan, and along with Spock and several other high ranking Vulcan figures, reinstated the Federation Presidential seat, as well as the Council and several Admiralities, including Commander Starfleet, which fell to Kestner.  It was decided that Foreman would remain a Captain to fly several planned spy missions into Volshin space to regain Federation territory.
Former Ambassador Spock became the Federation President, and he immediately set up talks with the Romulan Star Empire, in an attempt at aid in the Volshin attack on Vulcan that would surely come.  The talks were sucessful, and the Romulans agreed to a treaty guarenteeing the Federation aid during all conflicts prior to its rebuilding, and also preventing the Romulans from attacking the Federation during Reconstruction.
The Romulans massed a fleet at Vulcan, along with the five original Starships.  The Volshins bore down on Vulcan only two months after the loss of Earth, ripping apart every system between Earth and Vulcan.  As the Volshins approached Vulcan, they were met by only the handful of Federation ships remaining.  The Volshins disabled the ships, and powered down their own weapons systems to board them.  It is generally accepted that the reason for the Volshins not destroying the ships immediately was that they needed the extra ships in their attack on Vulcan.  Whatever the reason, as soon as they powered down their shields, the Romulan Armada decloaked nearby, and quickly immobilized the Volshin fleet.  Only one Volshin ship survived, and the Romulans used it to descern the technology behind the TON torpedo.  Once they did, the Romulan fleet adapted their ships to carry the TON, and immediately set out to regain territory.  The Romulans left a warbird for Foreman to carry out his spy missions, and under orders by Kestner, he immediately set out for Volshin space.
It took the Federation ten years to rebuild a very loose agreement between only one quarter of the worlds once encompassed in the Federation.  The weakened Volshins were driven back into their own space, and what was left of the Klingon Empire banded together to keep them there.  Soon thereafter, the New Klingon Empire joined the Federation as it continued to grow.
By the twelfth year of the New Federation, it had tightened its loose union, and increased its total fleet number to fifty-plus ships.  The Romulans had kept to the treaty very well until this point.  They had remained in their own space and not pressured the border.  By the thirteenth year, the Federation began to feel pressure along its border with Romulus, and they sent the U.S.S. Hawkins to investigate.  A warbird slipped past the Hawkins to Vulcan, where Commander Starfleet Admiral Kestner was kidnapped.  The Hawkins used a Klingon cloaking device to enter Romulan space to find Kestner.  He was located on Romulus.  The Hawkins failed in her attempts to retrieve Kestner, and one of the last remaining Captains from the Old Federation, Captain Foreman, was killed along with Kestner when the Hawkins was destroyed.
Shortly thereafter, the Federation was attacked by a massive Romulan fleet.  And had it not been for the Romulan ships still loyal to the Federation turning on their own fleet, the New Federation wouldve faced the same fate as the Old one.  The Romulans fell back to their own space, and the Federation continued to grow.
Due to Foremans spy efforts, it was learned that the Volshins were going to attack the Borg, massing the largest fleet ever recorded in the Galaxy.  It took them ten years to do this, but they immediately drove the Borg deep into their own territory.  The Volshins took everything it their wake, cutting a path of destruction across the Delta Quadrant.  They aquired a Transwarp Gate, and immedately began planning their attack on Unimatrix 001.  Ten months to the day after they began their asault on Borg Space, the Volshins bore down on Unimatrix 001, and it was elimated within hours.
Without the Unimatrix, the remaining Borg drones were confused and began simultan- eously shutting down all over the Galaxy.  The result was the sucessful neutrilization of the entire Borg Empire in ten months.  The Federation had been trying for nearly half a century.  To reduce the risk of attack by other races, the Volshins immedately moved their Headquarters to the Delta Quadrant, completely pulling out of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants by Stardate 63981.  The Federation sucessfully stomped out the Romulans, and grew until on Stardate 64015 it collapsed in on itself due to its quick expansion.  The remaining sects fueded for territory for a century.
The Galaxy was left in ruins because of one Leutenant Commander getting jealous over a friends wife.  Or was it more?
