| This is what I know and what I can remember. I will have another one done as soon as I can. Doug started racing in the All Pro Modified Division at Varney Speedway. It was a shared driving season with a friend. They won the championship that year. After the successful year that Doug had, he moved into the Late Model Sportsman Division at Sauble Speedway. He was driving the 14 white Dodge Daytona. I watched as a race fan for several years and I saw how he struggled. It never occured to me that someday I would be involved with this team. Doug had won a Hard Luck Award and I remember congratulating him when he came into the Coffee shop where I worked. I introduced Doug and my husband Don. I knew how much my husband loved racing and how much he would like to be involved. Don was invited to the shop and he was hooked. Don started helpling Doug in 1993. My husband recalls it as a lot of work but a great experience. He enjoyed helping Doug, not too mention he got a great friend out of the deal. They won their first heat race that year with a 318 engine. As the years went on and several failed engines they continued on. In 1993 they changed the Daytona's colour from white to red. That year they won Best Appearing Late Model. They continued to work very hard at making this team a success. With many hours of dedication, and a heck of a lot of determination they kept on going because someday they knew it would eventually pay off. Determined they were!!!!! In 1997 came the big change. They went from the body of a Daytona to that of an Avenger. That year with the 360 they called "old faithful" they won several heat races. With family and friends in the stands on August 9th,1997 and all the determination and hard work over a frustrating 7 years. The FEATURE was his!!!!! I remember that race as having several cautions with Doug leading green flag to checkered. There was a competitive field of good cars and drivers. It almost seemed impossible at times but it was meant to be! It was a very exciting and emotional time. That year (if I am remembering correctly) he was voted most improved driver. In the year 2000 they decided a change in number and paint scheme might change their luck. That year they finished in the top 10 for championship points and again won Best Appearing Late Model. It is now one race away from the end of the season for this team. 2001 has not been very kind to Doug and Don. It has been a short season as engine troubles and lack of racing nights has plagued this team. With a heat win in an Alstar Event race and with 5th and 3rd place finishes in two feature events. This team is now looking forward to 2002 running Late Model and possibly in the Challenger Division as well!!! I know that this team will have many more years of success. It takes alot of work to keep this team going. I am sure that Doug would like to thank his sponsors, family, friends and fans for all of their support over the years. |
