Coldwater Creek has welcomed the second and third foals of our 2009 season -- Love Come Quickly, a Secret Mission II filly out of grade I stakes winner and maiden mare Wild Wild Heart, and Thousand Words, a filly by our own home stallion Twenty Questions and out of maiden made Classic Wilderness.

A decent weekend at the races was capped by open allowance victories for Silver Cinders and Tortoiseshell.

Coldwater Creek Farm is delighted to present our first foal of the 2009 season:

Cormorant, bay colt foaled January 11
by Cast Adrift - Rosebird, by Twister
This fine colt is the second foal of his dam, Rosebird, a beautiful grade I stakes winner of $1.3 million in four years on the track. Both mother and son are doing very well, and Cormorant looks like he'll be another healthy and strong addition to the Coldwater ranks. His older sister, the newly minted yearling Alley Rose (f. by Alley Cat), is already the spitting image of her mama, and hopefully he'll be the same -- we should be able to tell in a few weeks once he gets some size on him. As for Rosebird, she will be bred back to Saltwater, who retires to stud for us in 2009.

As for the baby's name, we're trying to incorporate the "rose" aspect of Rosebird's name into her daughters, and the "bird" aspect into her sons. With Cast Adrift bringing to mind images of long stretches of still, open water, we decided to pick the name of a beautiful water bird, Cormorant, which is Latin for "sea raven."

No more foals are due at Coldwater for a couple of weeks, so Cormorant will have the place to himself. He's already had the stablehand girls cooing over him all day, so I think he'll manage as the center of attention. It's hard work, but somebody has to do it!

The first weekend of the 2009 racing season saw five victories for the Coldwater crew, including the grade I Flander's Gold Sprint for two-year-old champion OVER THE MOON, now undefeated in twelve starts, and a victory for champion CONVERSATION PIECE in the grade II Hialeah Distaff Challenge. Also in the win column were Silver Cinders, a four-year-old half-sister to Over the Moon who won a 1 1/2-mile open allowance; Off Key, who captured a restricted allowance; and Mosquito, who won a six-furlong starter allowance.
