Purse gets a boost for 2nd annual DNK New England Super Street Championship

Unity, Maine Limited Sportsman, Street Stock and Super Street racers from throughout New England will converge upon Unity Raceway in Unity, Maine Saturday, October 2 for the 2nd Annual DNK New England Super Street Championship. The event offers a New England record $6000-to-win for the class from a purse of $15,000 for the 100-lap feature race.
Over seventy cars from throughout New England made an attempt at qualifying for the inaugural DNK New England Street Stock Challenge last season. With additional money added to the purse and great word of mouth reviews from competitors and fans in attendance at the 2003 edition, it could find 100 cars or more competing for one of the 36 available starting spots.
Sign me up, says reigning Star Speedway Street Stock Champion Ron Bolduc of Haverhill, Mass. I had so much fun last year that if I only run one race this year, it will be this one.
Bolduc, also a three-time Street Stock champion at Lee USA Speedway in New Hampshire, was one of dozens of out-of-state drivers, representing every New England state except for Vermont, who chased Carey Martin of Windham, Maine to the checkered flag in last years DNK New England Super Street Championship.  For Martin it was his second $5000 score in s Streeter, having nailed down a 200-lap win in a long-discontinued event at Oxford Plains Speedway. This year the stakes have been raised.
There were 76 cars trying to qualify in 2003, and everyone is telling me that there will be more in 2004, says Unity Raceway promoter John Crawford. I hope theyre right. I really enjoyed seeing everyone from around New England coming together and racing real hard to put on one of the best shows anywhere in 2003. Ive even had interest from some Canadians this year that tell me they are coming down to give the race a try.
That inaugural event was contested without a weight rule, though this year a 2900-pound minimum has been established. While the vast majority of last years field was in that weight range, several cars were able to race substantially lighter. Even those drivers, who race regularly under similar regulations, claim to approve of the move.
The pit gate opens at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, with DNK New England Super Street Championship practice kicking off at 9:00 a.m.  Grandstand gates open at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Qualifying races start at noon. The rain date for the event is Sunday, October 3 at 12:30 p.m.  An open practice session has been scheduled for Friday, October 1 from 10:00 a.m.   4:00 p.m. Pit admission for that session has been set at $6.00 per person.
