| Unity point leader Scott Chubbuck looks for big score at June 13 DNK Select 250 Unity, ME The DNK Select 250 at Unity Raceway is set for Sunday, June 13, with qualifying for Maines richest race of the season set to begin at 1:00 p.m. The Pro All Stars Series will sanction the event, but the touring series regulars and several other invaders will have their hands full with the beefed-up roster of Unity regulars. The $25,000 winners share of the $160,000-plus purse has prompted many Pro Stock racers to call Unity home through the early stages of the 2004 campaign, most notably Scott Chubbuck of Wiscasset, driving the Cushman Competition Fords based in Westbrook. Chubbuck, a five-time Pro Stock champion at Wiscasset Raceway who has been a regular on the Pro All Stars Series in recent seasons, has been to every event contested this season at Unity, and currently sits atop the tracks Maine State Lottery Pro Stock division championship standings. While a part of their decision was based upon preparing for the DNK Select 250 and being first in line for the tracks lone provisional starting position should they encounter problems in qualifying, Chubbuck also wants to race closer to home than the PASS tour has raced recently, as his wife, Stacy, expects to give birth to their second child any day now. Freedoms Tim Turner ended a recent hiatus from Pro Stock competition on opening day at Unity, and has since climbed to second in the track championship battle. Third-ranked Kris Huff of Orrington is another newcomer to the weekly wars at Unity Raceway, ranking just ahead of a pair of drivers tied for fourth in the standings: Racin Ralph Nason of Unity and Jeff Burgess of Oakland. Both Nason and Burgess have been to victory lane at Unity this season, and both are considered legitimate contenders to win the biggest race in track history. Just behind them in the standings is Randy Turner of Freedom, who has opted to race at Unity regularly thus far in 2004 after concentrating mostly on PASS competition for the past couple of seasons. Not to be overlooked are the two most recent champions at Unity Raceway, Matt Lee and Dean Fuller, both of Albion. PASS regular Scott Mulkern of Falmouth scored the opening day win in the 104-lapper at Unity, and hell lead a charge of series regulars to the event, including DNK-sponsored Johnny Clark, the current series point leader, and two-time defending PASS champion Ben Rowe of Turner. Reigning NASCAR Busch North Series champion Andy Santerre will take a break from his Aubuchon Hardware-sponsored Bessey Motorsports ride to steer Doug Whites Pro Stock in the race. Santerre will be joined by Busch North Series regular Billy Penfold of Yarmouth and part-time BNS competitors Tracy Gordon and Dale Shaw. Shaw, a former champion of the Busch North Series, and Gordon, already a winner in Pro All Stars Series competition, both could be huge factors in the outcome of the DNK Select 250. Nason, 64, will be joined by Old Guard superstars Dick McCabe (a four-time NASCAR Touring champion), Stan Meserve, Jimmy McCallum and Al Hammond, to name a few. Multi-time Oxford champions Mike Rowe and Jeff taylor will be on hand, along with many-time Seekonk and Thompson champion Rick Martin. Sixty-seven Pro Stocks had entered the DNK Select 250 by the June 1 discount entry deadline, and entries are still pouring in. DNK Select 250 weekend kicks off with Pro Stock practice Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m. That practice session will continue until 4:00 p.m., when Unity Raceways Thursday Thrillers series takes over Maines Toughest Racing oval for a special Friday night appearance, with practice at 5:00 p.m., and racing starting at 7:00 p.m. A full day and night of action is set for Saturday, June 12, with Pro Stock practice running from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Unitys weekly racing series divisions take over the track beginning at 3:30 p.m. with practice for all regular divisions, with racing action set to start at 6:30 p.m. Racing action will be followed by a Happy Hour session for all DNK Select 250 entrants. Sunday, June 13 is the date of the inaugural DNK Select 250 Pro All Stars Series event. The pit gate swings open at 8:00 a.m. for the biggest event in Unity Raceway history, and the most lucrative payoff in all of Maine racing this season. Practice sessions kick off at 10:30 a.m., with heat races to qualify for the rich 250-lapper beginning at 1:00 p.m. Allison Legacy cars will run a race between the heat and consolation event for the DNK Pro Stocks, with NELCAR Legends filling the gap between the Pro Stock consis and the 250-lap main event, which should go to post at approximately 6:00 p.m. with what promises to be the most talented field of racers in track history. |
