| Dick McCabe files DNK Select 250 entry Unity, Maine The legendary Irish Angel, Dick McCabe of Kennebunkport, Maine, has added his name to the growing list of racers eyeing the biggest Pro Stock racing purse of the 2004 season on Sunday June 13 at Unity Raceways DNK Select 250 Pro All Stars Series race. One of the most popular drivers ever to tackle the Northeastern full-bodied racing scene, McCabe earned two championships on the old NASCAR North Tour, moving on to become a two-time champion of the current NASCAR Busch North Series before hanging up the helmet about a decade ago. McCabe is also a former Oxford 250 champion, but may be better remembered for an epic, brutal battle in that classic some twenty years ago with Geoff Bodine, a battle neither won. McCabe hasnt raced in several seasons, but has decided to return to the cockpit for another racing veteran returning from a long hiatus as a car owner, Wright Pearson, who has been inactive for several seasons. In fact, multi-time Featherlite Modified Series and Busch North Series champion Mike Stefanik got his first BNS victory in one of Pearsons cars. McCabe and Pearson expect to enter at least one PASS 150-lapper to test the waters prior to the Sunday, June 13 DNK Select 250. McCabe joins a long list of Maine racing legends that will take on the Pro All Stars Series regulars and a host of other Pro Stock invaders. A couple of these legends can even relate to McCabes long layoff, with successful resumptions to their storied careers on their resumes. Former NEPSA champion and three-time Oxford 250 winner Racin Ralph Nason, who also took an extended leave from his driving career at one point before scoring the aforementioned accomplishments, will be looking for the DNK Select 250 top prize. And Stan Meserve, now toiling in the DEI shops in North Carolina daily, once bounced back from an extended driving retirement to win several major Pro Stock races and even an Oxford championship. Maine native Meserve will reunite with car owner P.T. Watts for a shot at Unity DNK Select 250 glory. McCabe, Nason and Meserve will have to contend with a stout field of competitors for the top prize in Unitys biggest event ever. Near or at the top of that list are the father-son duo of Mike Rowe (a slightly-younger contemporary of the aforementioned driving trio) and Ben Rowe. Mike Rowe, a seven-time Oxford champion who has scored touring series titles with ACT and elsewhere, a couple of Oxford 250s and a Wiscasset title or two, while Ben Rowe has been Pro Stock racings hottest driver in recent years, coming off back-to-back PASS championships and an Oxford 250 triumph. |
