| Fish or Race ? That's the Question While waiting at Scotia Speedworld in the rain, Charlie Thompson got his fishing pole out and cast his line into a large puddle that was beginning to make the pit area look like a lake. " I like fishing but not doing very good here today, much like the racing" he joked. Charlie Thompson, of Lantz, NS is in his second year of driving the pace car at Scotia Speedworld. Some may remember Thompson as the driver of the number 20 street stock a few years ago. When asked why he gave up driving, Thompson smiled " Some of the competitors were getting too hard to chase." Thompson didn't jump from the number 20 into the pace car overnight. He worked on the clean-up crew for a couple of years first. Watching Thompson and knowing that he once raced, helps to understand how he handles the pace car to lead the more powerful race machines around the track to heat up their tires prior to the green flag. When asked what his favourite class was, Thompson answered " It's good racing out here. I like the Prostocks and the Sportsman best. I like more speed." With that, the call came to help dry out the track, and Thompson was off in a flash. Such is the nature of racing folk. |
