Second Generation Driver Brings Bathurst Back To Life

Peter Chisholm, of Bay River, just outside Bathurst, NB has been around racing since he was a boy. Chisholm's father raced at Danny's Speed Bowl and won many championships. Peter Chisholm also raced at Danny's Speed Bowl as well as Miramichi City in the 90's for about five years.
Chisholm laughed when asked about his accidents back in his racing days. " Once, while leading a Sportsman race in my #68 car, I was coming off a corner - got loose, and after going down the infield sideways - shot out on the asphalt and the second place car hit me. We removed two good cars in that one - Hardest hit I ever got."
"If there had been a Sportsman Tour back then, I'd have gone for it. That's what I needed. With six events, you have time for a life outside racing" Chisholm went on to say.
One of Chisholm's hopes is to retain as many of the old trophies from the days of Danny's Speed Bowl and pass them on to the new generation of drivers. " These are real trophies made out of metal. It would be nice to get them back into circulation" Chisholm stated. " Perhaps to someone who's relative's name is already on it".
Chisholm hopes to open Blue Mountain Speedway in mid July if the weather co-operates. " Everything seems to be falling into place. Got deals on some things and we're ready for the paving." Chisholm gleefully stated. " When we had our first meeting, there were seventy in attendance and thirty signed up as drivers. I'm hoping that the four cylinders will be large in numbers. Those first timers that want to race - this is the way to go - to get your feet wet. After you tread water and learn to swim - then jump into a Sportsman."
Chisholm's favourite driver " next to my Dad who passed away a few years ago is Dale Earnhart. - Always liked him". He went on to say " Anyone that comes here will be treated with northern hospitality and make their trip here memorable."
Since retiring to spend more time with his family, he has had a dream. It was to bring racing back to the Bathurst area. About five years ago, Chisholm came upon a gravel pit and started the planning. " I'm doing this for the love of racing - don't expect to get rich."
Guy Morrison, also a racer from the days of Danny's Speed Bowl, and his son, are into drag racing at Raceway Park in PEI. Morrison, who used to sponsor Chisholm, quickly became Chisholm 's partner. " Guy is a great partner. He knows what it takes to do something like this and is right there for it all" Chisholm stated.
