| Richard Boyd - Mr. Dragway Richard Boyd, who hails from the community of Norton NB., is a long time drag race performer. His moniker, "Mr Dragway" has been with him for a long time although he never gave a reason why. Boyd currently races a Super Pro, 1969 Plymouth Road Runner with a 440 cid engine with all the goodies. Boyd purchased the car in the United States in 1972 and has owned it ever since. He prides himself on saying that" the car has never been street driven." Boyd began his drag racing career at the old Penfield Dragway in Saint John,NB back in 1969. Since then he has raced at many venues all over the Atlantic provinces and many parts of the eastern United States. He hopes to return to the sites of his earlier days in the near future. In 2003 Boyd won the Atlantic Province Points Title at Raceway Park, PEI and the points derby at Maitland. To Boyd, racing is a family affair. "My wife Glenna supports me and our oldest son who has a snowmobile that races on asphalt as well" Like most racers, whether oval or drag track specialists, Richard Boyd has a Cinderella story to tell about a time when the challenge to compete was large . " Two years ago I raced here in Sydney,CB, at a double pay out event. Two weeks before the event, I blew my motor and the only thing I had in reserve was an old 1977 Ford Hemi ( name of a type of racing engine ). I had to freshen it up, so I worked day and night on it, installed it in the car on Wednesday and arrived in Cape Breton on Thursday. Then I went out and qualified the car #1 and won the main event on Sunday for the second year in a row". Boyd's outlook for the future is to continue racing for many more years and to remain competitive in a highly competitive field of endeavour. |
