             Rankin Wins Ayer 99

The fourth annual "Ayer 99", a Sportsman Invitational race at Shediac's Centre for Speed, hit the pavement last Sunday afternoon, as 18 machines from as far away as Sydney, NS vied for top honours in the prestigeous event.
Chris Reid, a Can-Fan Race Tours Sportsman Series regular, from Sydney, NS, grabbed the early lead and appeared to be running away from the field in the early going, untill a restart after an untimely accident brought the field back together on lap 9.
Shediac's Laurie Cormier grabbed the lead on the restart and led all the way to lap 63 when he got tied up with lapped traffic, leaving the door open for Calvin Rankin, a Saint John native, to go through the middle, grabbing the lead.
From there it was a hard chase to the checkered flag as Cormier and Miramichi's Wayne Wormell hot on Rankin's heels. For Rankin, it was his first win of the season, after being plagued by mechanical problems for most of the year.
