| March 20, 2004 - The Maritime stock car racing community was shocked this morning with the news that one of their most talented and respected competitors, Scott Fraser was the victim of a fatal snowmobile accident which occurred in the Wentworth Valley region of Nova Scotia. Scott Fraser died as a result of a head on collision with another snowmobile in the early hours of the morning. The driver of the other snowmobile is reported to be in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A second generation racer, Scott Fraser followed his father (Frank Fraser, a short track legend in eastern Canada) into the oval bullrings and began racing in 1987 at Onslow Speedway at the tender age of 16. Success came early and often for Scott Fraser during his racing career. In 1992 Scott competed on both the MASCAR Tour (Maritime Association of Stock Car Racers) and with the Maritime Modifieds (a weekly racing division) where he won the Maritime Modified Championship and was runner-up in the MASCAR Rookie of the Year standings. Scott continued to compete on the MASCAR Tour until it was shut down in 2000. He captured the MASCAR Championships twice: once in 1996, when he dominated the MASCAR series winning 12 of the 15 feature events and again in 1998, winning 6 of 13 feature events . 1999 was perhaps the most successful and decisive year for Scott Fraser and a year that would plot the course of his racing future. February,1999 saw Scott gather a lot of attention when he finished third in overall points and won two feature events at the "World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing" in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Later that year Scott drew even more attention when he captured the IPSC (International Pro Stock Challenge) Championship, amassing two wins and five top-5 finishes. He also competed on the MASCAR Tour, winning two of six feature events and earning four top-5's. At the prestigious Oxford 250 in Oxford, Maine, Scott again showed his talents and finished in third place.1999 also saw Scott |
| named as the Nova Scotia "Male Athlete of the Year". But perhaps most importantly in 1999 Scott's partnership with King Racing's owner Rollie MacDonald flourished and the pair set their sights on the ASA (American Speed Association) for 2000. In his first career ASA race Scott qualifying second and finishing in eighth place (putting Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia on the maps of many race fans throughout North America). In 2000 he competed in six ASA races and recorded four top-10's and qualified on the front row twice. His best finish was a third place in the "Time Warner Cable 200" at The Milwaukee Mile. In 2001 Scott competed in 13 ASA races recording four top-10 finishes. He also competed in four Pro Stock races and recorded two top-10 finishes. 2002 saw Scott competing in only eight Pro Stock races, but the talented younger Fraser amassed an amazing six victories, including a win at the coveted "Oktoberfest" at Thompson Speedway, Ct. In 2003 Scott joined the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour where he finished third in the points Championship, won two feature events, won the "Coast Tire Most Laps Led Award" and won the "GM Goodwrench Service Heat Race Award". Scott also won the Pro Stock main feature at the inaugural "C&R Auto Supply 250" at Scotia Speedworld, the PASS sanctioned main feature at NBIS on July 5th.and won the "Irving Oil Coca Cola Pro Stock 250" at New Brunswick International Speedway's "SPEED WEEKEND 2003" and collected a cheque for $25,400 for his efforts. During Scott's racing career he also won the prestigious "Riverside 250" an unprecedented six consecutive times (1993-1998) and has also won a feature event on the now defunct ACT series. During Scott's sixteen year racing career his accomplishments and accolades speak volumes for the desire and commitment that Scott had for the sport he loved and excelled at. In sixteen short years Scott had excited and delighted countless race fans, and inspired and assisted many other drivers to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Scott Fraser became a true Canadian stock car racing "Super Star" and a true Maritime stock car racing "Hero". Admired and adored by race fans throughout the Maritimes and respected by all his fellow competitors, Scott Fraser will be missed by all the people whose lives he touched. |
