Formula Three
In 1990, Hakkinen take part in British Formula Three Season. In this year, he joined West Surrey Racing and his teammate was Brazilian Christian Fittipaldi. His main rival was Mika Salo (also a Finnish). Hakkinen won 9 out of 17 races in this year. The highlight in this year may be in Round 8 at Silverstone. At that time Hakkinen had won three times, Salo four. Here is the comment of Peter Collins (Formula One team Lotus owner): "Hakkinen had been embroiled in a very hertic dice with Salo and the two of them touched ever so lightly in the Complex. What impressed me was that they had raced through a medium-speed left-hand corner absolutely wheel-to-wheel within an inch of one another and didn't touch....." Finally, Hakkinen won the championship at Donington.
