Rachel's Diaries
From the granite architecture of Glasgow to the blood red sunset in Portmahomack, each image evokes a memory of the places and faces I encountered.
I liked Mike’s innovate sound and he liked my vocal style. As an mp3.com artist I frequently visited the “Artist Bulletin Board”, a virtual board where fellow mp3 artists could promote their music and exchange reviews. Initially, the idea of to approach mp3.com was to get as many listeners to hit an artist’s web page as possible. This would generate “payback for playback” income for the artist and also move the artist’s song further up the mp3 charts. Despite there being thousands of miles between us, Mike and I produced “Electric Girl” together with “This Feeling” - subsequent remixes have followed. Mike sent over his music, I wrote the lyrics and melody line, and when we were both happy, I went into my local studio (Fast Forward Recording, Salt Lake City, Utah, U.S.A) and laid down the tracks. I would produce my own mix and send all the dry tracks to Mike for him to mix his own version. Mike then posted the tracks up on mp3.com. The great thing about the internet is that gaining global exposure independently is now a reality and I even have listeners in Japan! In the past this would have been a difficult thing to achieve without the help of a record label. Collaborating long distance also means that the collaborator brings their influences from their corner of the globe to the project, which in turn makes for new sounds and a flavoured interaction. Now that I’m back in the UK, we are still collaborating. It is still long distance although the distance is definitely shorter!!
