Mind Reader

We sit down to dinner at our usual time
With nothing much to say
An awkward moment stares us in the face
Silence as I try to read your mind
But I draw a blank and simply ask
Honey, how was your day?

Fine, you replied
As you sat there tapping your water glass
Staring off into the corner of the room
Hoping the moment would soon pass away
But the silence wont subside
As we sit there with nothing much to say

Im not a mind reader
Im not a psychic, prophet either
I cant tell you whats wrong, cant make it all better
When you try to hide, putting everything aside
Though Ive tried and tried
I cant read your mind

You talk about work, you talk about play
But when it comes down to certain things
Like what youre thinking and feeling inside
You dont have very much to say
Theres only silence and an awkward moment
As you tap your glass and look away

But I can see it in your eyes
I can sense the hurt and pain
And though we sit in silence, I can hear the cries
Of your soul that hold you down again
But I cant get in and you wont come out
I cant read your mind so Im left out in the dark

Im not a mind reader
Im not a psychic, prophet either
I cant tell you whats wrong, cant make it all better
When you try to hide, putting everything aside
Though Ive tried and tried
I cant read your mind

I cant read your mind
I cant touch your soul
I cant feel your heart
I cant heal your hurt
You wont open up and I cant get in
Youre afraid Ill catch a glimpse
Of your greatest flaws
And your darkest sins

But I'm not here to condemn
I just want to understand
