Olomouc
I moved to Olomouc in search of a job after receiving my TEFL certificate.  It is a small city, with about 100,000 people.  I didn't take too many digital photographs because I already had so many regular ones.  I will try to scan some of those in in the next few months.
On the right is the Church of St. Cyril and St. Methodius, who brought Christianity to places from Slovakia east to Russia.  This church is actually in Hejcin, a "suburb" of Olomouc.  Matt and I had our first date here at a concert of Leos Janacek's Mass in October of 1998.  The mass was written in Old Church Slavonic (a langauge like Czech), as opposed to Latin.  This was an important step for Czechs in forging national identity and pride in the nineteenth century (although they remained part of Austria-Hungary until after World War I).
On the left  is a monu-ment to the Red Army for liberating Olomouc after World War II.  While many communist monuments have been destroyed, this one remains.  After liberation in 1945, Czechoslovakia did not become a communist country for three more years.  The plans for this monument are also on display in the art museum of Olomouc.
Above is a strange building I passed on my way to work in the morning.
Lauren, one of the people I met in January, came to visit me in March.  Above, she is showing off the disguised above-ground pipes.  Hey, at least they are disguising them.  In the park in Hradec Kralove where the rivers flow together, the pipes are simply out in the open.

On the right, Lauren is posing with an interesting car we encountered.  This picture was taken in a lower part of Olomouc that was inundated in the floods of 1997.
Here are some shots of my apartment.  I had a nice big bed, but the place did not come with sheets and blankets.  Fortunately my grandma had sewn me some sheets, and I had my sleeping bag as a blanket.  I got some nice sunshine through the window in the morning, but I was at "garden level" and I had a lot of ants.
My bathroom was bright, but the kitchen was a bit heavy on the orange.
