| Shabbat Onegs- We here at UMBC, had tried to do Shabbat Dinners but alas they were not meant to be. We needed something that was efficient and showed results. We invented the Shabbat Oneg. It is a one-hour period of time in which you have 10 minutes of Torah talk, 10 minutes of a Shabbat custom, 10 minutes of a Shabbat relaxation exercise and 30 minutes to have food and schmooze. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur- each year services are held at John Hopkins University. We provide transportation for the students who want to attend either the Reform or Conservative service. The Orthodox students generally have a place in Pikesville to go to, if they do not then we can set them up with a place. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Sukkot- Every year, we have a Sukkah that we help assemble it by the Campus Pond. We held dessert festivities and pizza lunches in the Sukkah. It was nice for the students who wanted to eat in the Sukkah during Sukkot. I found that also to be a great engagement tool, students saw that we were having lunch and were eager to join us. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Hanukkah Party- We had a huge blow-out here at UMBC, with a DJ, Live Band, a dozen pizzas and more!! The program was held in the University Commons Ballroom. We had 75-100 people. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Purim!!! We had Purim Balls, Purim Treats for the Troops and a Megillah reading. These programs were well thought out and required several weeks of planning. The Jewish Student Group did alot of work on this and they should be proud! | ||||||||||||||||||
| Passover- The holiday this year happened to be during Spring break, so we did not deal with it much. The only 2 days that I was in the Office during the holiday we served lunch which was an important thing for the commuter students. If a student needed a place to go for any Seder, we can find them a home in Pikesville. Our Passover lunches provided food to over 25 students per day. | ||||||||||||||||||
| Shavout- We did Cheesecake and learning out on the Erikson Field. During this holiday, it is custom to have a dairy meal and Hillel provided it. Fun was had by all and the cheesecake was delish! | ||||||||||||||||||
