The Shield Charm
[Information from HP Lexicon]

The Shield Charm is used as a spell that will create a magical barrier that deflects hexes thrown at the caster. In order to cast this charm, the caster much say the incantation, Protego with a determained tone. The wand should be pointing somewhere towards the hex or curse that is meant to be deflected in order for the Shield to work properly. The Shield will stay in place as long as the caster keeps his or her wand raised. It will probably break as soon as he or she casts another spell or moves the wand completey away from the target.

In Latin, "protego" translates in English as "to defend."

At Hogwarts, this spell is usually learned in a students sixth or seventh year, depending on the teacher, in either Charms or Defense Against the Dark Arts class. However, adult wizards and witches still have trouble perfecting the spell. Though it is important, because it can be extremely useful while defending oneself in a duel, and has been known to save many people's lives.
