Eastern Garter Snake
Eastern garter snakes are great starting pet snakes.  They don't require very much temperature or hummidity requirements, and have inexpensive food requirements.  They are also very docile, but also very active.  They are beautiful, fun, and an overall great snake.

HUMMIDITY AND HEATING
Garter snakes really do not need any special heat or hummidity needs.  They are native to Wisconsin, Minnesota, and almost all of the great lakes and allmost all of the northern states. They hibernate, and are used to the four seasons climate.
FEEDING
Feeding is the easiest part to keeping garter snakes.  I like alternating Rudy's diet between feeder guppies and leaf worms.  Small frogs are also a favorite food of garter snakes.
ENCLOSURE
Garter snakes, like all snakes, enjoy a large cage,  but not to big.  When small, a 3-4 foot cage will do just fine.  When full grown, you could buy a little bigger one.
FLOORING
Many things can be used for flooring for a garter snake.  I use calcium pellets, but you could use sand , woodchips, or even reptile carpet.  Another great flooring is moss.
