MOUNTAIN CLIMBING

 

DAY 1:      

  Transfer from Moshi 900 m above sea level to Marangu gate 1800 m above sea level, for registration. At the gate you may get opportunity to buy maps, books, post cards, camera films, snacks and drinks. After registration ascent to Mandara Hut 2727 m above sea level for 3-4 hours. This route is very scenic and not too strenuous. Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut.

 

 MARANGU ROUTE (6 Days 5 Nights)

DAY 2:     

   After breakfast start ascent from Mandara hut to Horombo hut 3700 m above sea level for about 6-7hrs to reach Horombo hut. After emerging from the forest which is a short walk from Mandara hut you may get the first views of  Mawenzi peak and south eastern slopes of mountain Kilimanjaro. Then you head into the moorland with grass, shrubs, bush and few flowers. At Horombo camp you may buy water, beer and soft drink and snacks.  Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

 

 

DAY 3:      

  This is acclimatization day. You will walk for about three hours to Mawenzi hut gaining 800 m. You will pass Zebra Rock, just another miracle; you will also reach the memorial of Loretta Mae Hendricks who died on the mountain in April 1979. You will see the Saddle and the south eastern slopes  of Kilimanjaro. After reaching  Mawenzi Hut 4600 m you will  return to Horombo Hut for a rest. Acclimatization is very important as it increases chances of reaching the summit    

 

 

DAY 4:   

     After breakfast start ascent from Horombo Hut 3700 m above sea level to Kibo Hut 4700 m above sea for 6-7hrs. You will walk through the semi desert landscape of the Saddle. On your way you will see Middle Red Hill, West Lava Hill and East Lava Hill. Before you retire you will have to arrange the summit gear.  

 

DAY 5:      

At 12 midnight start final ascent to Uhuru Peak (summit 5895 m above sea level). In the first three hours you will pass through rocks to Hans Meyers Cave 5100 m above sea level have a short rest then proceed for another three hours climbing very steep section to Gillman’s Point 5685 m above sea level. You can have another short rest then proceed on the crater rim for one hour to Stella Point. After walking for half an hour past Stella Point you will reach the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak 5895 m above sea level the highest point on the Africa continent   Time taken is 8hrs of slow, arduous and cold climb. At the peak the morning offers stunning aerial views. You will spend a short time taking photos before starting to descent to Kibo Hut for a short rest gather the rest of your gear and then descend  for another three hours to  Horombo Hut  3700 m above sea level for dinner and overnight.

 

 

 

DAY 6:     

   This is final day, after breakfast start descent from Horombo Hut 3700 m above sea level to Marangu Gate 1800 m above sea level, time taken is 4-5hrs; collect your certificates at the gate. Those reached Gillman’s Point 5685 m above sea level will be awarded green certificates and those who reached Uhuru peak will be awarded gold certificates.  After that certificates awards you will be transfer to Moshi/Arusha.

  END OF TREKKING. 

 

Machame Route (6 nights 7 days)

 

This is the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. With a lovely gradual ascent through forest you emerge to see wide view of the moorland on Shira plateau, Kibo and the Western Breach

 

Day 1        

  Start from the hotel at 9:00 am drive to Machame gate 1900 m above sea level, start walking through rain forests for 6 hours to Machame hut 3000 m, for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 2      

    After breakfast, start walking through savannah type of grassland with lunch packet on the way. It takes 5-7 hours to Shira hut 3840 m above sea level for dinner and overnight

 

Day 3     

     Its acclimatization day, walking to the Shira plateau and Shira Cathedral 3900 m above sea level, back to the camp site for hot lunch and relaxing.

 

 

Day 4    

      After breakfast, start walking to Arrow Glacier camp 4800 m above sea level via Lava Tower 4600 m above sea level. It will take 6 to 7 hours to the camp for dinner and overnight

 

 

(Option: walk from Shira camp to Lava Tower for 5 hours for dinner and overnight and next day start a 3 hour walk to Arrow Glacier to allow daytime shorter before final summit ascent)

 

Day 5/6  

    At early mid night start final summit ascent for 8 hours to UHURU PEAK 5895 m above sea level , start the descend to Barafu camp 4700 m above the sea level for breakfast. After the breakfast you start a direct descend to Rau camp 3200 m above the sea level for dinner and overnight.

    

Day 6/7   

   After breakfast start walking to Kidia gate and then drive to a hotel in Moshi. 

              

  

LEMOSHO ROUTE ( 6 NIGHTS 7 DAYS)

 

This is a newly established route. It has very beautiful scenery of western breach, Shira plateau and the great Barranco wall. To enjoy this scenery it will take not less than 7 days of both ascent and descent.

 

Day 1         

Start from the hotel at 7:30 am to Lemosho gate 1800 m above sea level and ascent for 3 hours to Mti Mkubwa camp site 2700 m above sea level for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 2       

   After breakfast start ascent for 4 hours walking through the heath and moorland with a lunch box on the way to Shira I camp site 3650 m above the sea level for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 3        

  After breakfast start walking for 3 hours from Shira I to Shira II camp site 3840 m above the sea level for a dinner and overnight.

 

Day 4       

   This is acclimatization day. You will go to Lava Tower 4600 m above sea level with lunch boxes ascend to the top of the tower and the descend to Shira II for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 5         

After breakfast at Shira II ascent for 6 hours to Arrow Glacier camp 4800 m above sea level via Lava Tower again, dinner and overnight at Arrow Glacier camp.

 

Day 6       

  Early in the morning 12:00am start the final ascent to the summit UHURU PEAK 5896 m above the sea level make photograph and after a short time descend  down to Barafu Hut 4700m above the sea level for breakfast. After the breakfast descend to Rau camp 3200m above the sea level for dinner and overnight.

 

Day 7     

     After breakfast at Rau camp start the 4-5 hours descend to Kidia gate where you will be awarded your certificate if you successfully reached Uhuru Peak, then drive to the hotel in Moshi or Arusha

CLIMBING GEAR

Climbers are strictly advised to come with the below listed climbing gear. If one can not get any of these gears our company can arrange for the hiring of the same in Moshi.  

Trekking gear 

Rain suit, takkies or cross trainers, short pant, tracksuit pant, T-shirt, sun hat to be used at the peak, woolen socks, woolen beanie, and water bottle. 

Summit gear  

Leather or thermal boots, ventx or gortex boots, ventx or gortex pants, fleece jacket, fleece pant, gortex or thinsulate gloves, glove liners, woolen balaclava, thermal balaclava, thermal top, thermal long johns, thermal socks, sunglasses with UV protection, day pack, head torch, thermal flask and gaiters 

Equipment 

Dufell bag, walking stick, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, towel, wash cloth, tooth bush, soap,  

Uhuru Peak 5895 m above sea level 

MENU ON THE MOUNTAIN 

All meals provided by MK safaris are carefully selected to provide carbohydrates for energy and fats for sufficient body heat. 

NON VEGETARIAN 

Breakfast 

Spanish omelet, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, Fried eggs, French toasts, fruits, sausages; served with tea, coffee, drinking chocolates, milk, cocoa powder and energy drinks, jam mixed fruits, peanut butter and margarine. 

Lunch 

Toast, fried potatoes, French toasts, spaghetti, served with fried chicken/chicken source, beef stew/ tuner fish.  

Packed lunch 

Toast, boiled eggs, fried chicken, sandwiches, French toast, with juices and different types of fruits. 

Dinner. 

Soup with breads or pen cakes, spaghetti, macaroni, rice, fried potatoes, served with beef, chicken and tuner fish stew 

NB. Before dinner we serve hot coffee or tea with biscuits, cakes or popcorns and peanuts. 

VEGETARIANS 

Breakfast:

Lunch:

Dinner: 

Vegetable soup with breads or pen cakes, spaghetti, macaroni, fried potatoes or boiled potatoes, rice, served with vegetable source.

Karanga Valley

SAFARI ITINERARY

 

Lake Manyara/Serengeti/Ngorongoro Crater

( 6 nights/7days ) 

Day   1    

    Direct arrival in Moshi check in a Hotel for dinner and overnight                 

Day   2       

After breakfast, with picnic lunch, drive for 4 hours to Lake Manyara National Park for a game drive. You will take your lunch in the Lake  Manyara National Park. After the game drive you will proceed to a hotel or lodge around the lake Manyara National Park for dinner and overnight.

Day    3  

     After breakfast, with picnic lunch, you will drive for    about 4 hours  before reaching a  park gate of the  Serengeti National Park. On your way you will pass on the rims of Ngorongoro crater and visit the Olduvai Gorge, widely known as the cradle of  man kind. You will have a game drive and you will take your picnic lunch at a designated place in the national park. You will watch the sun set and thereafter you will drive to and check in a lodge or camp site in the Serengeti national Park for dinner and over night.

Day 4  

   After breakfast you will have a full day game drive in the Serengeti National Park with option of having your lunch at the lodge/ camp or have picnic lunch. After game drive in the evening you will drive back to the lodge for dinner and overnight 

Day   5  

   After breakfast with your picnic lunch you will drive for about 2 hours back to Ngorongoro Crater. You will go down in the crater for a game drive and drive out in the evening to a lodge or camp site for a dinner and over night. 

Day  6 

  It’s a full day game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater and in the Evening you drive out to the lodge camp site for dinner and overnight.

Day 7  

  After breakfast, drive back to Moshi.. On the way you may go Meserani village for camel riding and visit snake park. You may pass  Arusha to buy some souvenirs. In Moshi you will check  in Hotel for dinner and overnight

 

Day  8      

  You will  have a town tour in Moshi including visiting coffee farmers in the villages and thereafter transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for departure.

 

PRE- DEPARTURE INFORMATION. 

a.     General information 

Tanzania is home to one of Africa’s most magnificent game reserves, fabulous national parks, (few places in the world have hundreds of thousands of wild animals in their natural habitat), beautiful beaches, and the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro. Remarkable policy changes and liberalization of the economy has made Tanzania one of the most attractive destinations in the world. Peace, tranquility and politeness of its people has further made Tanzania a good place for adventure and for one to enjoy holiday  

b.     Land

Tanzania is the largest country in Eastern Africa, has an area of 937,062 sq. km. It lies just south of equator. It has approximately 30 million people. 

c.     Climate

The country experiences hottest months from October to February and long rainy seasons from mid March to late May.  

d.     Flight 

Direct flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport from Amsterdam Schipol by KLM will be the best option for those traveling from Europe and North America. There are daily KLM flights in this route Those from South America connection at Johannesburg International Airport could be quite convenient. From Middle East, the subcontinent of India and Far East will have fly to Dar es salaam first and then travel by road to Moshi or Arusha by road. Flying to Nairobi in Kenya can also be possible. We can arrange to pick clients from any of the mentioned airports.

The two main official languages, English and Swahili

GMT + 3 hrs 

g.     Passport and visa 

All visitors require valid passports. Visa is obtainable fairly at any Tanzania Diplomatic mission. Also visa can be obtained at point of entry at a fee of USD 50.00.  

h.    Currency 

The Tanzania shillings has 200, 500, 5000, 10,000 notes and 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, coins. Foreign currency may be changed at any bank, forex bureaux, and designated hotels. Credit cards are acceptable by top tourist hotels banks and some shops. 

i.       Heath requirement 

Visitors must have international certificate of vaccine against yellow fever. Vaccine against hepatitis, typhoid, tetanus, cholera and polio is recommended. As in many tropical countries, visitors are advised to take precaution against malaria. 

j.       Airport tax 

There is an airport departure tax of USD 20 per person 

2.                Hotels 

Tanzania has hotels and other sorts of accommodation that carter for all pockets, from the luxurious and expensive hotels such as Holiday Inn, Royal Palm and Protea Hotels, down the line to guest houses which are suitable for budget visitors. It will be good for clients to indicate their choices. 

3.                Packing list 

a.     What to wear 

Since Tanzania is a tropical country light weight cotton materials are suitable clothes. Respect of customs is very important therefore short and transparent clothes are discouraged. At high altitude it may get chilly especially in the evening and early in the morning as such sweater or jacket may be desirable. 

b.     What to carry 

Memories are made of photographs. Cameras, video cameras, binoculars are useful. For wildlife safaris:  torch, sunglasses, hat, insect repellent and first aid kit are important.  

4.                Pre-tour in Moshi. 

Arrangement can be made for clients to spend some couple of days before tour and or after tour. Client may visit coffee farms, coffee processing plant, carry cultural tour to various places around Moshi, do some shopping in curio shops and buy famous tanzanite at comparatively lower prices.
