| Latest news breaking out of Edmonton is that the Oilers General
Manager Rabi Sultan is looking to trade away his top puck rushing defenceman Tom Poti. Poti who is only 25 years of age and recently won a Silver Medal with the US Olympic Team in Salt Lake City has been playing with the Oilers. The 6'3" 215 pound defenceman who was drafted 59th overall in 1996 has firmly established himself as a regular on an Edmonton team laden with young talented players such as Mike Comrie, Marty Reasoner, Ryan Smyth, Eric Brewer and Shawn Horcoff to name a few. |

In a press interview held last night at the Skyreach Centre, Rabi Sultan explained that the Oilers needed a stronger punch
offensively, "The Oilers right now are a solid defensive team with one of the best
checking lines and 6 great defencemen in front of one of the world's best goalies in Tommy Salo.
However we really need more punch up front despite having the players we have currently.
Even though we have acquired Eric Lindros we did lose a fantastic right winger in Anson Carter, and really we need to get another
winger as opposed to another centre or defenceman" True enough as the Oilers starting lineup forwards of the past two games had a total of 7 centres from a total of 12 forwards. Pretty high numbers. There has been much interest around the league for Tom Poti who isnt a highly priced player and also who is young, agile and fast. There have been rumours circulating for this player, especially taking note were Tampa Bay, Carolina and Toronto. Although Sultan and Poti and his agent have not openly discussed any trade rumours it seems certain Poti is to leave the club by the end of the month. Players such as Tanabe, Alfredsson and Leclavier have been mentioned but it has yet to be seen how many players and which players are to be traded as Sultan said earlier in the month that his team roster is basically up for grabs apart from some core franchise players. |
