Fruits Basket is an entertaining anime to watch. The main character is Tohru Honda. She is a girl who lost her mother in an accident recently and lived in his grandfather's house afterwards. Unfortunately, since her grandfather's house suddenly undergone renovation, she was forced to live in a tent in the woods. By some bizarre twist of fate, she finds Yuki Souma, a classmate of her's, living in a house with his cousin, Shigure Souma, in that area. At that time, Tohru's tent was devoured by a landslide. Yuki convinces her to live with them while the renovation is going on. With the sudden appearance of Yuki's nemesis, Kyo Souma, Tohru learns of the terrible curse that envelopes some members in the Souma Family. They transform into a particular animal in the Juunishi, or the Chinese Zodiac, whenever they are hugged by anyone of the opposite gender. Yuki transforms into a rat, while Kyo turns into a cat, and Shigure turns into a dog. According to legend, the cat was tricked by the mouse so he was never included in the Juunishi. Because of this fact, Yuki and Kyo always seem to fight. There are 12 cursed members in the family (rat, cat, dog, boar, monkey, dragon, ox, snake, tiger, sheep, horse, and rooster) The poeple who are supposed to be cursed by the horse and rooster aren't shown in the series (manga only).


Hiro Souma

She is very optimistic and kind even after the death of her mother. She can be very naive and stupid at times. She enjoys being around members of the Souma Family and vice-versa. She is often refered to as the one who can save them from the curse. People often feel at ease in her presence. In school, she is under the protection of Arisa and Hanajima, her two best friends.

Yuki is also known as "the Prince" in school, he even has his own fan club. He belives that his reputation is a facade he keeps to make people like him. He want to blend with normal people and seeks a normal life, that's why he ran away from the Main Souma House. He is very good in the martial arts, being able to beatup Kyo whenever they fight. He posseses the natural beauty of a girl, a fact he deeply resents. He likes Tohru because of her kind and warm presonality. He turns into a rat when hugged by someone of the opposite gender.

He turns into a cat. He always seems angry and always talks about how he hates Yuki. He hates leek very much. He studies the martial arts in order to beat Yuki (so far unsuccessful). He is afraid of Kagura. Tohru is probably the one he needs, in order to save him from his second form...

He is by far one of the funniest characters in this series. He owns the house where Yuki and Kyo live in. He is a writer, who very much likes to taunt his editor. He is quite a pervert who likes seeing high school girls. If you watch the series, you'll see why he's so funny. He turns into dog when hugged.

Kagura Souma

She is very pretty, pretty weird. She seems to have one track mind, like a boar, which is the animal she transforms to by the way. She also seems to have a two-sided personality. She loves Kyo very much, that whenever she sees him, she tends to lose control of her excitement and start beating him half to death.

He transforms into a rabbit when hugged. He is very energetic and child-like. His carefree attitude sometimes annoys Kyo. Surprisingly, he's much older than he acts, only one year younger that Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo. He can also be smart when he needs to be. Beneath his cheerful temperament, hides a very sad secret...

He is the Souma family doctor and caretaker of Akito. He's supposed to turn into a dragon when hugged, but instead, he turns into a seahorse (rather dramatic difference, don't you think?). He is very serious and cold, but he once had a love that was broken because of the curse. He doesn't want Tohru to experience the same fate as that of Kana (his love), whose memory was erased.

He turns into an ox when hugged, which explains his patially white hair. He looks rather cool with his nice clothes and bicycle. He has a split personality known as White/Black Haru. When he becomes frustrated, Black Haru appears and he becomes rude and angry, even though his "White" self is well-mannered and calm. He once hated Yuki by a misunderstanding, but now, he likes him. He also studies the martial arts.

She is a very shy girl who suddenly stopped talking because she was being bullied at her school. Tohru helps her gain the courage to speak up once again. Kisa admires Tohru like a sister. She transforms as a tiger when hugged.

He is Yuki's older brother. He transforms into a snake when hugged. He is very charismatic and talkative. He tells lots of outrageous stories from his high school days, much to the dislike of Yuki and Kyo. He owns a strange costume shop that sells different kinds of clothes. In the past, he disliked Yuki and ignored him, but now, it is apparent that he regrets his actions.

You can say he's the black sheep of the family, because he turns into a sheep when hugged. He loves Kisa and would do anything for her, but after Akito hurts her because of him, he begins avoiding Kisa. Eventually, they play together again with Tohru's help. Hiro is basically a kid who likes to talk smart to anyone he dislikes. He tries to act like an adult and act tough. In the end, he eventually accepts Tohru as an acquaintance.

He turns into a monkey when hugged. He looks very much like a girl. Tohru only realized that he was a boy when she bumped him and he transformed. He has an incredibly low amount of self-esteem. He apologizes for almost anything that happens to them. Tohru helps him increase his self-esteem.

He is the head of the Souma Family. He has a habit of getting sick always. It is safe to say that he is the most cursed of them all because from the day he was born, he was doomed to die at the age of 30, for he carries everyone of the curses. He is very strict and abusive towards all Juunishi members.

She used to be a gang member but was influenced by Tohru's mother to stop. She is now one of Tohru's best friends. She likes teasing Kyo. She is called as a Yankee (whatever that means) because she is very tough and strong.

Tohru's second and scarier best friend. She can be rather blank in expression and words, but she is just as devoted as Arisa to helping Tohru. She posesses the ability to sense electric waves from people and send them out at will, a useful tool in warding of the Yuki Fanclub.
