Cellist Robert Sang-Ung Choi was born in Chicago and began studying music at the age of three; first the violin and later, the piano and the cello. His love and talent for music was evident to his music teachers, but to Sang-Ung only later in life. After earning a Bachelor's Degree in Cell Biology from the University of Michigan, he decided to turn away from the science, medicine and engineering world that lay before him in favor of a life in music. Pivotal in this decision was his 93-yr-old piano teacher and mentor, Dr. Blythe Owen, who taught him not only piano but also to believe in his own musical instincts and abilities.
The following years brought awards, honors and degrees from various musical institutions, yet all of this remains overshadowed by the experience he gained by moving to Salzburg, Austria. Under the guidance of cellist Heidi Litschauer, Sang-Ung developed a pureness and clarity of tone and expression which has brought him rave reviews and countless performances as soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in Japan, North America and throughout Europe.
In addition to his work as principal cellist of the Salzburg Chamber Philharmonic, he is also cellist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra.
