Getting a Peace Bond |
I
You'll get a one-page form on which you'll have to explain why you need a peace bond
against
the person harassing you. You'll also need to give the person's home address.
Then an officer will go to the person's home and formally notify him/her/hir that you've
applied
for a peace bond.
The person can either sign the bond, agreeing to it, or contest it. Either way, both of you
will have
to appear briefly in court.
In court, you'll be asked to explain again why you need a peace bond.
If the person has already signed the bond, the Justice of the Peace will issue it, and decide
the
terms of the bond, like how long it lasts and what actions are prohibited.
If the person contests the peace bond, the Justice of the Peace will set a date for a hearing
to
decide whether or not to issue the bond.
If you have questions about the peace bond process, or other options, you can call Victim
Services at (709) 729-2900.
Or check out their web page in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of the Newfoundland Justice Department.
