The obvious solution, $3 and $5, is wrong.

The eight loaves were each cut into thirds, then each of them ate 8/3. The hunter paid $8 for his 8/3, or $1 per 1/3.

The first shepherd (3 loaves):

Had	Ate	Sold
9/3	8/3	1/3

The second shepherd (5 loaves):

Had	Ate	Sold
15/3	8/3	7/3

So the first shepherd should get $1 and the second $7.
