Let's assume Joan had Y dollars before she found the four dollars. So she ended up with Y + 4 dollars.

If she'd lost four dollars she'd have Y - 4.

So Y + 4 is 5 times Y - 4, or:

	Y + 4 = 5 * (Y - 4)

	Y + 4 = 5Y - 20

	24 = 4Y
	
	6 = Y

So she started the day with $6.00.
