DURHAM CRICKMORES

Provided and researched by John Crickmore

It is thought that the Crickmores that lived in Durham appeared to have descended from Robert Crickmore and Urseline Watling of Southwold, Suffolk. This link has still not been proven through firm records, but the use of the name 'Ursula/Urseline' in the female children of the Crickmores in Sunderland would appear to support this claim.

The information on the Durham Crickmores has been compiled from information provided by Chris Elsden and Richard J Crickmore. Information on the early Australian connection of the Durham Crickmores has come from Richard J Crickmore and Marie Wilson with recent details being provided by John Crickmore.

In the 1851 census Ursley (this time called Usley) appears with an 11-year-old William and a 9-year old Robert (born and registered in Blything, 1842). [Research by Chris Elsden]

Robert William Crickmore later became a Master Mariner. The Lloyd's records state that Robert William was born in Suffolk in 1839 and his Master's Certificate, number 26713, was issued at Sunderland in 1870. He was master of the Mary Ann Annison, also the Jessie Kelly, and on these two vessels, between 1870 and 1874 sailed to South America, the United States, Australia and the East Indies. He had a collision in the Mary Ann Annison on 15th November 1872. The Mary Ann Annison sunk in Kaipara Harbour (Auckland, North Island New Zealand) in 1885. There is a record of the Mary Ann Annison arriving in Sydney in 1873 with Robert William as the Master. [Research by Chris Elsden]

There is also a record of a Robert William Crickmore, mariner marrying Mary Smith in the then Colony of Victoria in 1879. (See early Australian Crickmores for further information)

Early Australian Crickmores

Early records of the colonies that went on to form the States of Australia in 1901 show several Crickmores that came to settle or visit on ships. Marie Wilson has listed some of the early arrivals.

One such visitor was Robert William Crickmore, Master of the Mary Ann Annison who came to Sydney in 1873.

Comparison of the scans of the signatures from the Crew and Passenger lists, and the church records for the Robert William's marriage to Christen Stuart and his brother Henry and the marriage register for the Colony of Victoria would strongly suggest that Robert William of Sunderland is the same person who married Mary Smith.

Records indicate that Mary Crickmore remarried in 1885, to George Rolfe.
