In the beginning thou, O Lord, didst lay the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands. They shall perish, but thou remainest: and they all shall wax old as a garment; and as a vesture shalt thou fold them, and they shall be changed. But thou art the same, and thy years shalt not fail |
And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning didst lay the foundation of the earth, And the heavens are the works of thy hands; They shall perish; but thou continuest; And they all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a mantle shalt thou roll them up, As a garment, and they shall be changed; But thou art the same, And thy years shall not fail |
Of old didst thou lay the foundation of the earth; And the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure; Yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; As a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end |
Comments: The agreement between the NT and
the LXX is nearly exact. The MT replaces the thought of “rolling
up” a mantle with that of “changing” it.
Two other minor differences - work versus works, and the presence of the conjunction “and” - between the LXX and the MT are also apparent. The LXX is supported in both these cases by 11QPsa, and “works” is the reading in 4QPsb and some Masoretic manuscripts. |
