Death has prevailed and swallowed men up

New Testament

Death is swallowed up in victory

Masoretic Text

He hath swallowed up death forever

Comments:  The LXX and the MT both disagree somewhat with the NT.  The MT has “the Lord” as the subject, not “death.”  The NT has a passive form of the verb for swallow, whereas the LXX is active.  The “prevailing” of the LXX is reflected in the “victory” of the NT.

Apparently the reading “in victory” is also followed by Theodotion.  Lamsa’s translation from the Peshitta has “He will swallow up death in victory forever.”
