Matthew 4.10: Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve Luke 4.8: And Jesus answered and said unto him, It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve |
Thou shalt fear Jehovah thy God; and him shalt thou serve, and shalt swear by his name |
Comments: The NT, LXX and MT agree except
in the verb. One could take “worship” as a synonym for “fear,” but
it seems a bit of a stretch. Lamsa’s translation from the Peshitta
gives “reverence.”
Brenton’s Septuagint is based on Codex Vaticanus. Codex Alexandrinus replaces fobhqhsh with proskunhseiV, bringing the LXX into agreement with the NT. |
