The Gaze of the Soul
Martha Kilpatrick
Mary
filled her sight with Jesus. The eye of her being had no double vision, seeing
the world and God... both.
She
saw with concentration, one Object, the Important, ignoring the unimportant.
The
gaze of her inner soul fixed on Him, held no competing vision.
The
eye of your soul is not in physical vision. It is in the focus of thoughts, the obsession of the
heart... in secret.
Where
your eye is turned is the certain direction of all your future. What you see is
what you follow. Where you look is where you go. The object of your focus is
even... what you become.
Humanity
is always consumed with something, riveted to some internal essence.
Our
nature is devotion -- creatures of worship, bowing subjects to something chosen
worthy of love.
The
eye of human nature is fixed in sick infatuation with the unworthy object of...
self.
Mary
gathered the fragments of her scattered sanity, left the complexity of logic,
the endless boredom of her predictable self and in simplicity, with single
focus gazed on Jesus.
The
seeing of her mind, the center of her heart was a Person, not an idea, not a
doctrine nor a religion.
As
David of old, she had formed her purpose to seek after Him, to know Him
intimately, by a passionate choice to "behold the beauty of the
Lord." Psalm 27:4
To
fill her being with consideration of One other than
her all demanding self.
She
had found One whose mystery held her imagination captive and there was no
reason to look in any other direction.
"If
your eye be single, your body will be filled with light." Matthew 6:22
And
she was.
