| The Belleville Police Department ates back to 1836 when two men were sworn in as Constables. The Department is older than the RCMP (1873), the OPP (1909) and the Kingston Police Service (1841). In 1850 William Haseltine was sworn in as Chief of Police. The Chief from 1877 to 1886 was Mr. Hugh MacKinnon of Black Donnelly fame. The Department's various units are: Identification, Youth Crime, Criminal Investigation, Community Policing, Courts and Uniformed Patrol. Belleville is a city of about 45,000 and is located in southern Ontario about half way between Toronto and Ottawa. |
