VICTORIA POLICE
A description of the Victoria Police Patch:

The crown is the St. Edward's Crown and is the symbol of Royal Authority.  It indicates that the Victoria Police Force is part of an organisation of Her Majesty, The Queen, controlled by the state of Victoria.

The Laurel Wreath is the symbol of valour.  It typifies the attributes that the members of the Victoria Police stand out as a courageous body ready to uphold the virtue of valour.

The five pointed star denotes the multi-directional nature of police duties and indicates that the members are prepared to go in any direction to perform their duties.

The circular title band simply bears the title of the service in which the wearer belongs.  The navy blue background is symbolic of our link with the old London Metropolitan Police who wore navy uniforms to distinguish them from the military.

The centre piece represents the constellation of the Southern Cross.

The motto, UPHOLD THE RIGHT, has been translated from the French TENEZ LE DROIT which stood as the motto for the Victoria Police Force from 1947 to 1986.  It was originally thought that the translation of the motto was UPHOLD THE LAW but the Commissioners felt that there was more to police work than - upholding or enforcing the law.
