ENGINE - 1.3L Geo |
This was my first engine attempt - I decided to go with a Continental C-90-14 rather than the 1.3L Geo engine. See that page here. |

Geo Engine with the Raven Re-drive installed |
I've been thinking about what engine to use for my Tiger Moth since I first purchased the wing kit. Because of the narrow cowl on the Tiger Moth, I decided to stay with an in-line 4-cylinder power plant. If I had gone with the RS-80 (steel tube fuselage) model, I would have chosen the LOM, www.moraviation.com in-line, 120 hp, engine. The LOM is too heavy for the wood fuselage and the Walter Mikron 75 hp doesn't have the power I'd live to have. An auto engine with a re-drive began to sound like the way to go. I talked with Dennis Robinson, who was using a Geo Metro 1.3 liter engine with a Raven Re-drive on his R-80. He had been very impressed with the engine set up and the folks at Raven www.raven-rotors.com. I ordered by re-drive in October and purchased a used engine, which came from a 2001 Geo Metro with only 2000 miles on it. I also ordered an engine mount from FFP. Raven sells a completed engine, ready to go but I choose to buy the drive and modify the engine myself to save a few bucks. |

The re-drive is a work of art. Jeron Smith, the owner of Raven, promised to help throughout the process of hooking the two together. He took a LOT of calls from me and I was never disappointed with his advice. Jeron knows the Geo/Suzuki engines backwards and forwards. I ordered a bunch of parts over the Internet, including the radiator, starter, alternator, distributor and wiring harness. For the most part, this worked out well. |

It took about 7 months for me to get the parts together, modify the engine and finally install the engine on a test stand and wire the whole thing. I had help from my friends Dave and Eugene, thanks guys! Finally, when the silly thing wouldn?t start, I took it to Scotty's Automotive in Campbell, CA. Scotty and Dave were GREAT! Dave had the thing running and tuned in no time at all and it runs great! Thanks boys!! |

As I work on the rigging and covering of the rest of the plane, I can push the motor out on the driveway and run it up whenever I feel like it. It was a lot of work but well worth it at this point of the construction. |

I haven't decided on a prop yet |
