What is 64-Bit? (In Windows, this refers to the way memory is accessed).

Get in the fast lane - Today, 64-bit processors have become the standard for systems ranging from the most scalable servers to desktop PCs. The way to take full advantage of these systems is with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows products. The 64-bit systems offer direct access to more virtual and physical memory than 32-bit systems and process more data per clock cycle, enabling more scalable, higher performing computing solutions. There are two 64-bit Windows platforms: x64-based and Itanium-based.

16-bit - 16-bit applications access memory in 16-bit "chunks" (2-bytes). Most DOS, Some portions Windows 95 and 98 applications are 16-bit.
32-bit - 32-bit application access memory in 32-bit "chunks" (4-bytes). Large portions of Window 95 and 98 and many new applications are 32-bit applications, and will run faster because it is more efficient to access chunks of memory.
64-bit - 64-bit application access memory in 64-bit "chunks" (8-bytes). Many new applications, such as graphics and multimedia programs work best with 64 bit or higher access memory.
