In Utero

Nirvana

I'm not like them / but I can Pretend / The sun is gone / But I have a light / The day is done / but I'm having fun sings Kurt in the mournful punk-blues almost-ballad Dumb. If fun is what Cobain is having, it certainly doesn't sound like it. Delightfully droll jibes directed at someone are crooned before the powerchords enter on many of the songs on this album, Cobain seems to lament fame, the s-u-c-k-s-e-g-g-s style success he has achieved, while wishing to return to the pre-Nevermind anonymity he can never achieve, he seems distraught and angry as In Utero works its way into your subconscious. Teenage angst has paid off well / now I'm bored and old, as the opening lines of the album are groweled at you you realize that this is the sentiment that sums up the album. Cobain resents his success, and is anxious to tell the world. In amongst this post sensation frustration is some of the best music Nirvana has ever released, and although so much attention that should go to the band as a whole is redirected at Cobain, Grohl and Novoselic participate just as much in the loud-Soft games of In Utero, and deserve credit. Probably the best Nirvana Album, this album was, due to that famous suicide, the culmination of Nirvana as a musical entity, and as such, is a fitting one.
