Lotto Fever: A woman came speeding home, tires screaching as her car ripped into the driveway. She ran into the house. She slammed the door and shouted at the top of her lungs, "Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!" The husband said, "What should I pack, beach stuff or mountain stuff?" "It doesn't matter," she said. "Just pack and get the h_ _ _ out!!" 10 tips to stay young: 1.Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight, and height. Le the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay "them!" 2.Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down. 3.Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. 4.Never let the brain idle. "An idle mind is the devil's workshop." And the devil's name is Alzheiner's. 5.Enjoy the simple things. Laugh ofter, long and lound. Laugh until you gasp for breath. 6.The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive. 7.Surround yourself with what you love, whether it's family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge. 8.Cherish you health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help. 9.Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is. 10.TELL THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE THAT YOU LOVE THEM, AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY. One Hundred Years Ago: The year is 1906. One hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1906: The life expectancy was 47 years. Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone. There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower! The average wage was 22 cents per hour. The average worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000.00 per year, a dentist $2,500.00 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500.00 and $4,000.00 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000.00 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used borax or egg yolk for shampoo. Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The five leading caused of death were: Pneumonia and influenza; Tuberculosis; Diarrhea; Heart disease; and Stroke. The American flag had 45 stars. The population of Las Vegas, Neveda was only 30!!! Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. Two out of every ten adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all Americans graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at the local corner drugstores. Back the pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels, and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help. There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.A.! Share this information with your children or grandchildren and try to image what it may be like in another 100 years. Poem for Peace by Millie Pacurian, Senior News' Reader: Peace, peace, what a wonderful word I wish over the whole world, it could be heard. Suffering death, anguish and pain a world of terror. Are we all insane? Our beautiful flag, flying so high. Blowing gently against a clear blue sky. What a wonderful sight this would be. Can we make it happen, you and me? Yes, we can, if we really try. Lets spread love, hope, and cheer to everything that we hold dear. Bring our children home. Remember and mourn the ones we lost. In a world of turmoil such a terrific cost. Bring peach to our land of the brave and free. Bring sunshine back to you and me. Peace, peace, what a powerful word. Shout it out loud: let it be heard!! 2006-09-13 16:49:53 GMT
